I love Math! I love that there is a concrete answer to get to. There may be different ways to get there, but there is usually only one answer. Trained as an Engineer, I am a creative problem solver, which comes in handy with my 4 year old twins! I love to craft and decorate my home. My goal this year is to see more of Florida, where I live.

What is your teaching philosophy?

We all learn differently. There is a customized approach for everyone.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I'd assess their knowledge base and learn their interests.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I set concrete goals to attain and find their motivation. I encourage them along the way.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd encourage them by celebrating their achievements and reminding them why they want to attain their goals.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By staying focused and summarizing what they read in their own words.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Finding out what they do know and what they struggle with. This way, you can build on what they do know.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I'd find out what motivates them and relate the subject to that. Make it fun!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Have them do practice problems on their own and have them teach it to me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

With encouragement for what they have achieved.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I figure out where they are struggling and go back to a place in the curriculum where they do know the material.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I find a style that they respond to and build on what they already know.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Scratch paper to work out problems, drawn visuals, and practice.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'd try to find a different approach that make sense or relates to something they are interested in.
