What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to teach based on the needs of my clientele. What does this mean? It's all about you! I will work with what teaching style helps you accomplish your goals in the classroom and beyond.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know my student. I would ask them what they need to focus on the most and work around what they need.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by helping them find what works for them. I can help them by relating concepts to real life scenarios and engaging with them in an open non-discriminatory manner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by encouraging them and letting them know that they can achieve what they set out to achieve.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would slow down, focus on that individual skill or concept, and give the student the extra time he or she needs to understand the concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would go over the material with them, help them understand context clues, and relate the material to other scenarios.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that using many different learning strategies work when starting with a student. The key is that every student is different, and everyone has different ways of understanding the material. I find what (strategies) works for each individual.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student get excited with a subject they are struggling in by using fun techniques to show that learning can be fun rather than something to dread and put off.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use testing techniques along with sample questions to insure that a student understands the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would build a student's confidence by assuring them that they can understand the material and by simply engaging them with the material on a more frequent basis.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would evaluate a student's need by basic testing and by asking the student questions to find out how much they do already understand of a subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt the tutoring to the student's needs by teaching them in a way that works with them. If a student explains to me that a certain teaching method does not work for them, I will help them find what will work for them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use textbook material, a pencil, paper, or a whiteboard.
