I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I was an 8th-grade science teacher in Cleveland, Ohio for three years. I loved getting my students engaged in all the aspects of Physics, Biology, and Geology that I taught. Yet, my favorite by far was space science. Prior to teaching the basics of astronomy, I hadn't appreciated the intricate magnificence of things like how stars form or what makes a planet habitable. As I was able to inspire my students, they also inspired me. They told me to do more and get involved and I took their advice.

My wife and I have just recently moved to Washington so I can attend George Washington University's Space Policy Institute. I'm studying to become a part of the growing space technology and policy field, but I also miss my students. This is where tutoring comes in.

One-on-one teaching is the best kind. Teaching an entire class is a special skill, but tailoring instruction to individual students is where deeper learning can happen more often. I've enjoyed classroom teaching, and I'm eager to continue teaching one student at a time.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Hands-on; learn it fun and for real or don't learn it at all.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know each other. What's your motivation? What are your struggles? How do you learn best?

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Don't give every answer. Find what motivates them. Make it interesting even if it's mundane.
