I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have three years of experience teaching a variety of high school math, science and college prep classes in Texas. I also had the privilege of developing and coaching the girls soccer program! I have an additional 4 years of tutoring and teacher assistant experience outside my role as a teacher, specifically working in curriculum design for the ACT, SAT and calculus-based Physics classes. I have my Texas Teacher's Certification, and received my Bachelor of Science in Physics at the University of West Florida. I am currently working towards a Masters in Applied Mathematics, while studying for the actuary professional exams.
My absolute favorite subject to tutor is Physics; not only because my back ground is strongest in this subject, but also because the way to tutor these concepts is simply the most fun. Most students struggle with understanding the connections between the necessary math and the physical consequences. The best way to reinforce the math and the science together is to get up and do it. Scientists, of course, spend a lot of time reading and writing; but the true understanding of a topic comes when you can both experience the consequences of the concept and explain them to another person. Students will spend a lot of time in my physics sessions sliding, spinning, dropping, rolling, skidding, pushing and pulling themselves, non-breakable objects or even the occasional family member. Don't worry, I leave the family pets out of it! Although those of you online may see my cat in a few demonstrations.
My tutoring style looks more like a coach and less like a teacher. I believe that students must be guided towards reflecting on their own learning, communicating their own areas of need, and developing study skills and classroom habits that work best for them. It is more important to me, as a tutor, to set the student up for continued success with the long term goal of them being independent learners. This coaching method allows me to be flexible within the constraints of the goals and the curriculum to better respond to your student's actual need.

What is your teaching philosophy?

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

If I don't already have information on the courses, course sequence, current topics, and learning goals for the session, I would start there. Sometimes, a student has a particular problem or section they want to work on, but others want to go through an old test, prepare for a new test, or have reached the point of frustration so that they don't know what they need.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

This highly depends on the student and what motivates them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would spend a lot of energy on "why" there is a difficulty.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

In math and science, the type of reading comprehension needed is more about picking out the needed information or translating vocabulary to experiences they have had.
