Rachel

Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Biology. During my time as an undergraduate, I served as a Biology tutor for my schools Biological Sciences Honor Society and as a mentor for graduating high school students through the Dream Project. As a tutor, my main duty is to work with a student as an individual and to adjust my own tutoring to fit the way they learn best. I believe that all students have what it takes to succeed in school, its just a matter of finding the style of learning that is most effective for them. What works or makes sense for one student will not necessarily work for the next student, and so it is essential as a tutor to be able to explain the same concept in a variety of different ways and to be able to determine when a student has fully grasped the concept. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and pets, working on creative activities such as drawing and writing, and traveling whenever I have the opportunity.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During my first session, I like to spend a little time getting to know the student and their goals before getting into the material itself. Whenever I'm working on test preparation or AP classes, I talk with the student about their knowledge of the material, their preferred styles of learning, and (most importantly) their goals both for our tutoring sessions and for their overall performance on the subject. I also like to get a sense of the student's other courses and their current workload so that I can tailor our tutoring sessions and any assigned practice to complement their schoolwork without overwhelming them.
