What is your teaching philosophy?

Methodology, Methodology, Methodology! I teach students a process so that they can use their understanding to help them solve any question in the field of study.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would love to firstly get to know the student, and then set up a schedule of what we want to accomplish during the sessions, as well as send them a variety of materials ranging from course notes to practice tests. I also believe that it is important to keep parents within the discussions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe that students can become independent learners by the method in which they learn. I want to teach my students the methodologies on how to solve problems, regardless of the subject matter we are in.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help create and set up a series of short term goals and help my student reach them so they can realize that hard work can truly pay off.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

There are nearly an infinite number of ways to solve a problem, and not everyone, including myself, can solve a problem in a specific way. I would strive to reteach the skill, concept, or problem in a different way so that the student can most effectively understand the meaning of the problem.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension can be one of the most difficult parts of learning and education; my mentality is to help the student go over the problem as well as show the student different perspectives on the text that they are reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Immediately diving into the problems, not wasting time on the first session, using online sources as well as the wonderful online tutoring practice problems, as well as making sure to go back to problems previously solved to make sure the student has a full understanding on the topics covered.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I love showing the beauty in all fields of learning. From a proof to a topic in history, I believe that I can get a student excited in the topic they are learning not only through course notes and problems, but videos and other multimedia as well.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Not only do some tests not measure potential and knowledge, they do not measure aptitude. This is why I try to not only make sure that the student passes their tests and exceeds their own expectations, but I can have a knowledgeable discussion with them on the topics covered!

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I believe that by proving to a student that they are succeeding in the short term, my students will realize that they are benefiting and truly learning in the long term. This can be done by reinforcing the student's success on a short term problem set, test, or simply a question.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I try to not only discuss with the student or parents on what they need to focus on learning, but I also observe how a student will tackle a problem or concept to evaluate their specific needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I try to not only use the wonderful materials that have been provided from the tutoring company, but a variety of test prep content, multimedia (YouTube), as well as any other material that the student is completely free to share. I want to maximize the success of the student in every way possible!

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Each student learns differently; my goal is to find out how a student learns (whether it's visually, through doing problems, or with lectures), and to then alter my teaching style to theirs! Parents and students alike are always welcome to help me figure out how to best help my students!
