I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am currently a student at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and receiving my B.A. in French with a concentration in educational studies and linguistics. My love for french and francophone cultures began when I was a student at a french immersion elementary school. I have been studying french for 15 years already! My hobbies include traveling, singing, playing in orchestra, hiking, swimming and spending time with friend and family. I dream of teaching english abroad after graduating from St. Olaf, maybe in France, Switzerland, Morocco or another francophone country. I'm in love with Minneapolis and the Twin Cities and hope to come back to the cities to get my Master's degree.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to inspire children that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to with motivation and persistence.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I want get to know students! I would ask about their interests and make connections with my interests. I would then apply their interests to the material that we are learning. The first session would be low key because we would only have just met. Creating relationships off the bat is key to creating motivation and connections with students!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would guide them, giving them a lot of help and guidance initially, and when the students start to understand a little better, I would have them try exercises on their own, which would boost their confidence and thus help them become more independent!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will show them that they are better at the subject matter than they think they are, which will increase confidence.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Let them struggle through it, but guide them when they absolutely need help.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Have them act out the reading, role play, and read aloud.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Get to know them a little, and make funny jokes at my expense.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would show them that they can learn the material, despite their doubts.
