I am a very patient and understanding tutor. I believe in teaching students concepts rather than training them to plug in numbers and get answers that they dont understand the meaning behind. My goal is to tutor kids into being well educated rather than well trained.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that rather than spitting out answers at students, we should focus on teaching them the concepts behind every problem instead. Rather than teaching them how to plug in numbers into a formula, we need to teach them why the formula works and in what situations to apply these formulas.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would first get to know them with a brief conversation. Then I would try to learn about what teaching style they prefer best. Every student learns differently and it's my job to be the most effective tutor for the kid. Last I would ask about what particular topics of a subject they are having trouble in and then plan properly for future sessions, as well as getting started in teaching them the first session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best thing would be to help them learn better study skills. Usually most students do not work in loud environments, so I would teach them to budget their studying and leisure time so that they can eventually become independent and learn on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The best way for a student to stay motivated is when they see results. My goal will be primarily to make sure that they are always learning and improving, and then the results will be there for them to be motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will be patient with them and try to understand fully what exactly they are having trouble with and then adjust my teaching style to their preference.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will try to teach them the reading skills that I have learned throughout my academic career. One of the key things would be to try and get them in the habit of reading novels; this will greatly improve their reading comprehension abilities.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know the student is one of the most important things because it allows the student to trust you, and then they will believe in the teaching methods.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

The best way to get a student excited about a subject is to make them think about its practical uses. Many times kids who struggle with a subject just feel that it’s not necessary for them to learn it. By teaching them the how applicable the subject is to their daily lives, this can get the students excited.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

One of the best techniques that I was taught was to teach the student the concept behind a topic before introducing any calculations into it. Once they learn the concepts they will establish a set of fundamentals to refer back to when they stuck.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

The best way to build their confidence is to take their goals and to split them up into parts. If a student has a goal of becoming a great writer I would first teach them how to write a good introduction, and then slowly build them up to their final goal.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student’s needs based on my understanding of the material and what needs to be taught in order for the person to excel in the subject being taught. I will know which techniques and methods will help a person become better, and then I try to teach it to them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

My philosophy is that the students need come first, and therefore I always am able to tweak my teaching style to compliment the student's learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Some type of whiteboard is ideal, or even a chalkboard, as well as some online computer resources depending on the subject being taught. In addition to that would be the textbook that the student is using.
