I'm a graduate student currently pursuing a master's degree in Adolescent Education at the City College of New York. I have a bachelor's degree in both History and Literature and have about seven years of experience teaching and working with children. I've been pursuing teaching and education as my career since I was in high school and have worked a variety of jobs in that field, including children's programs at libraries, private tutoring lessons, and teaching summer education programs, not to mention observing in classrooms and student teaching as part of my master's program.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I'd like to initially assess how they feel they learn best and then work off of that. I also think it's important to see where they are at in relation to what their goals are so I know exactly what they need to meet those goals.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Having a student take notes while they are reading, as well as making charts that assist with the contents of their reading, allows the student to have a reference to look back to if they are confused or lost within the reading. Having them slow down and take their time while reading also helps them digest the information more effectively and keep the pace of reading steady, so that students don't try to rush ahead or speed read.
