Certified Tutor

Hi! My name is Edgar Flix and my passion for language education, educational experience in international contexts and advanced credentials have prepared me for being your foreign language online tutor.

I would like to give you some personal information about me and my career. I hold a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education and a B.A. in Foreign Languages with a minor in Interpretation. In addition, I have been awarded several prestigious scholarships and grants to study and work abroad. For example, I worked as a Spanish language instructor at The Lincoln University in Pennsylvania through the Fulbright Program.

My former educational experiences in the United States, Mexico, France, and Germany and the completion of my master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania have strengthened my passion for education and teaching foreign languages.

As a Fulbright alumnus and Ivy graduate, I understand the need of instructing students not only with knowledge but also with the pertinent skills and dispositions to succeed in today's world. World culture and foreign languages are often displaced in today's classroom.

I have also had the opportunity to teach in Nice, France. I worked in two high schools through the French Ministry of National Education: Lyce Honor d'Estienne d'Orves and Lyce Beau Site. My proficiency in Spanish, French and English has taken me to the international job market. As it is stated on my
rsum, I am currently working as the interpreter coordinator of the NGO Committee on Social Development at the United Nations in New York City and I'm also working at Drexel University as a foreign language instructor.

My international background, advanced credentials and educational experience make me an ideal tutor for you. If you need any additional details or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would review what the learner knows and identify if there is a particular concept that needs to be revised before starting with the lesson.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It's always a good idea to provide students with online resources that help them to be self-sufficient learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Highlight the perks of commanding a concept, and the benefits that they will bring.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If plan A doesn't work, we still have all the letters of the alphabet. There's always a different way to explain the same concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Learning to speak a foreign language is about risks, and risks are not a bad thing. It's important to let them know that they need to be risk-takers when learning a new language.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt it according to my student’s age, purpose, educational background and time.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Online resources.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

As a lifelong learner, I believe assessment is an important component after each class; therefore, I like to assess my students to see if the information and concepts provided were clear.
