Chris

Certified Tutor

Over the years, I have tutored many students in math and science. I have learned how to make a sometimes complex subject into something fun & simple.

Since I made the decision to learn the math, I have excelled in the subject ever since. This resulted in my peers and family asking me for help in math & science for over 25 years. During my undergraduate studies, I made A's in all my mathematics courses and was invited to join the Math Honor Society.

I enjoy helping others understand math and science, whether it's simple mathematics like addition and subtraction or more complex subjects like calculus and physics. I have helped a number of students who were struggling in math & science succeed in these areas to drastically improve their grades.

My schedule is pretty flexible and I look forward to meeting with you.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I would tell them the applications of subjects, like how calculus can be applied to the fundamental sciences like in physics. Some students I have tutored like physics, yet struggle with the mathematics aspect.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I get to know the student, and ask questions where they are experiencing challenges in the problems. I also have them show me the problems they want me to work out, showing them step by step how to do a problem. Then I have them work out another problem for themselves while I work it out with them. Then we compare answers.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The way I have students become independent learners is that I work a few problems for them, and have them work a few on their own. One of the key elements in assisting students to become independent learners is to help them build confidence in learning the concepts for themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students find easier ways to do the problems, and make them fun and interesting. I have learned to turn a boring subject, like mathematics, into a fun and interesting endeavor. Usually, I ask the student why they are taking the course at the first lesson.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would attempt to get to the root cause of his or her challenges by asking questions like, "when did you first experience this difficulty?" Difficulties usually result from limiting beliefs like "I'm not smart enough." I reassure them that many people are smarter than they give themselves credit for.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I help students identify the proper parts of speech, and how they are used in sentences. I also help students identify key words in problems and instructions on what it is asking for.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I develop a rapport with the student.
