What is your teaching philosophy?
Teach a student with patience and remind them that they are capable of doing what they strive for with the work they put in.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know them first and ask them what seems to be the problem in the material they don't understand.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
The best way to become an independent learner would be by showing them to learn from their mistakes and try to spend more time on things they don't understand.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would probably try by showing them how it feels to have a better grade in the class. The feeling of achieving that grade they desire will also help them.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would spend more time and boost the student's morality up so he or she can have the confidence to achieve the skill or concept. For example if learning the steps of glycolysis is the problem, we could go over it as much as possible using words and pictures, then have the student attempt on their own.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading comprehension can be quite difficult, especially with heavy-duty books. My way of helping would be by asking the student to tell me what they think the book is saying, and then help them.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I found that showing a student the skill or concept first and then doing it with them, followed by making them do it on their own works best.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Making a student excited that they understand something always helps them work through the problems easier.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Small quizzes and asking them to explain to me in detail the material would be my way of knowing that they understand the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
To build a student's confidence I would show them that they have to make some form enthusiasm toward a subject, and that later they can do it to help others.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Student needs can be evaluated by doing a pre-test on the material and going over whatever seemed was the worst subject
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Whatever the strategy that is being used to help the student is what we stick to.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Depending on the material; usually the textbook and a notebook works best.
