My passion for math and reading started at a very young age, but I quickly understood these subjects aren't fun for everyone. I started tutoring my peers in elementary school, and went on to organize formal peer tutoring groups in middle and high school, to help bridge gaps between teachers' expectations and my peers' reality.
I've used my lifelong passion for math and problem solving to obtain my Master's degree in Computer Science, but I know that without a solid background in math and reading, my advanced degree would have been difficult to achieve.
I prefer students to understand, from their unique point of view, why 1+1=2, why x*y=z or why "knock" only has one 'k' sound. Kids have a lot going on in their academic and personal lives, so I take time to talk to my students, take a few steps back from the problem and understand how they're tackling the problem. I've found that this conversation facilitates my understanding of how the student learns, and lends to their deeper understanding of concepts to apply to future, independent problem solving.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Sometimes it's important to take a step back to make sure a student understands the building blocks to their current material. Understanding where each student is coming from is important to determine how we are going to move forward to success!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Give them the foundation needed to move forward, and help them establish a habit of how to study.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Small, positive steps toward the overall goal. Learning where the student is confident, and making sure they do not burn out, is key to keeping things positive!
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By talking to the student to learn what they understand, have confidence in, and have fun doing.
