I recently finished a PhD at the University of London in the UK, where I taught freshman and sophomore English literature and writing for three years. I love teaching and tutoring English literature, especially the challenge of exciting a student's interest in something they never thought they would like (one of my proudest achievements is getting young male students to enjoy writing about Jane Austen). As a teacher though, I became most passionate about supporting students to develop their writing and essay skills so that they could reach their full potential and truly succeed at college and beyond.

My style is supportive and encouraging. I firmly believe that with the right explanation, students can become confident and successful in writing, understanding technical terminology and developing their own arguments. I help students realize that the essay form can work for them, as a way to communicate their ideas effectively. I take students seriously and treat them with respect.

Before my doctorate, I studied English to Masters level at the University of Exeter (in the southwest of England). I have also worked in politics, education policy and research, which has given me experience of using a variety of communication and writing styles. In my spare time I enjoy hiking and canoeing, reading and travelling.
