I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX in 2013 with a double degree in English Literature and Psychology. I am currently pursuing my master's degree in Speech Language Pathology at San Jose State University. I've worked with kids, infants to late teens, for over a decade. From babysitting and nannying to tutoring and being a counselor at a special needs camp, I have enjoyed the opportunity of working with kids in many different settings. I've volunteered to help high-risk children with their homework and been a group leader for a special outreach program for girls (9-12) who were at risk for losing literacy skills during their summer break.

My background in English Literature makes me a great teacher for reading comprehension and essay writing. I am also very adept at tutoring elementary and middle school level math or other general subjects your child might need help with on their homework. I've also recently begun teaching SAT critical reading and writing to much success. My years of experience have taught me to be creative with my teaching style: the material should be relevant and the lesson should be fun when applicable. Students get lectured at all day during school; working with a tutor should be more personal. After working with many different children, I also appreciate that not all children learn the same way: if the child isn't learning the material, I should try a different approach.

Outside of my own graduate school work, I love to practice yoga and spending lots of time outside. I naturally have an insatiable appetite for books and have recently finished Henry James' "What Maisie Knew" and David McCullough's "1776". Recently moved from Texas, I'm enjoying all the wonderful hiking the area has to offer, the close distance to the coast, and the always interesting San Francisco just a short drive away.
