My purpose is to serve the youth and promote youth development. As an Eagle Scout, my early commitment to service afforded me several key opportunities to serve in administrative, leadership preparatory positions. At Morehouse College, I served as a Bonner Community Service Scholar, where I primarily served as a tutor and mentor to middle and high school students through a West Atlanta youth empowerment organization, Raising Expectations. In addition to boosting the students mathematical performance on the CRCT and EOCT, I gained valuable recruitment experience while presenting to and recruiting volunteers from the metro Atlanta colleges and universities.
While studying mathematics at Morehouse College, I conducted undergraduate research for two years. I was able to form statistical correlations between ten socioeconomic factors and air pollutant concentrations. During this experience, I was also able to develop an index to determine the most ecologically sustainable colleges in the metro Atlanta area. I gained professional presentation experience introducing my findings at various research conferences throughout the Southeast region.
During the 2011/2012 school term, as an AmeriCorps service member at Georgia State University, I demonstrated on a daily basis my ability to teach, tutor, and mentor middle and high school level mathematics students. Additionally, I created community service projects for a local Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) project. In preparation for the GYSD, I was responsible for collaborating with several non-profit organizations in order to recruit volunteers, install free energy-efficient light bulbs in West Atlanta residences, as well as plant trees and establish a teachers' lounge at Woodson Elementary School. This summer, our AmeriCorps program developed DREAMS Summer Institute, a culturally relevant summer enrichment program for disadvantaged high school students, at Georgia State University. I was responsible for developing a teaching model in accordance to the GA Performance Standards and was instrumental in recruiting students in preparation for the program in addition to teaching all mathematics courses for the program.
"There is no progress without struggle."- Frederick Douglass. I understand struggle. In spite of my early struggles in mathematics, I have gone on to earn a BS in Mathematics, with a minor in Physics. I mold my instruction behind that of my high school Calculus teacher. His approach was rooted in the following question: "What does this have to do with what I already know?" This approach helps me lead my students to probe their minds for their current mathematical tools. It is then my job to help them bridge the gap of knowledge and application to help them reach new knowledge and understanding. Assess, Review, Challenge, Review, Repeat. This is my method for success.
