Tutoring review by Avni in Port Orchard, WA
The student and I tried to finish the rest of the packet from her study guide. We moved deliberately today because there was so much graphing involved, and I really wanted to make sure that those principles were strong because they show up again and again through high school and college. However, she did a great job and I taught her a few little algebra tricks on how to check your answers on a test so that you know your final answer is correct!

For tonight's session, the student and I went over parametrically defined functions and polar coordinates. I spent the first half of our time going over the basic definitions; this seemed to be easy for him. I expect faster progress next time when he has more material from class to go over.

The student and I worked on a series of advanced problems involving volume and surface area. In particular, we talked about scalar values and how they affect the aforementioned attributes. It took a bit of theorizing, examples, and practice, but eventually the student got the idea of applying scalars of dimension at a time multiplicatively, and how for example the radius of a cylinder counts for "two" dimensions at once, etc. I also gave him some harder problems that weren't on his sheet about applying different scalars to different dimensions and finding surface area, to show him that there actually isn't a consistent formula for it, but rather you just have to do it manually, "the long way," by finding each face.

The student and I continued to cover exponential equations. We went over several practice problems. I taught her how the multiplier in an exponential equation is related to percents. For example, a 5% increase can be represented by multiplying a number by 1.05.

Tutoring review by Joel in Port Orchard, WA
For a majority of the session, we worked to memorize all of the prime numbers from 1-100; her teacher promised $100 to the student who could recite them all by Monday. In addition to creating jingles to remember the numbers, I also asked some clarifying questions to ensure that she understood why the numbers were prime (What are the factors? Why aren't any of these numbers even?) We then closed the session by reading one of the books she selected from her class library. Her reading has improved much over the past few months, and her newfound eagerness to read was a delight. She is also showing more patience while reading, which is helping with her comprehension.

For this session, we moved on to the student's class' next unit, logic. Though she struggled initially in distinguishing the different kinds of conditional statements, she was able to tell a converse from an inverse and a contrapositive by the end of the session. I was also impressed by how quickly she understood the concept of logical necessity and adapted to the symbology I taught her. A proper introduction to basic logic involves a lot of intricately connected information, and she processed it all very well.
