Hi! My name is Elena and I'm going into my senior year at Brown University. I am obtaining a BA in both Psychology and Literary Arts and absolutely love my multidisciplinary coursework.This summer, I am looking for opportunities to tutor children and teens to help them develop a love of learning. I have been working with children since I started high school, first as a volunteer teacher's aid in local elementary schools with kindergarten and first graders. I later volunteered for two years and then was hired for two years as a classroom intern at Horizons at Greens Farms Academy, a summer program for underserved youth in my community. Through this program, I was responsible for teaching reading, writing, and math to first graders. As an intern, I ran a small reading group and worked through the program's literacy intervention program by creating my own worksheets and activities to engage the students with their reading. Last summer, I worked at the Berkeley Early Learning Lab and helped conduct an infant study focused in language development. Outside of my research, I tutored four-year-old twin boys in reading, writing, and math.I am a confident tutor in Psychology and English as I have been passionate and successful in these areas through high school and college.

I'll be graduating from the Ivy League this spring; I've worked in numerous prestigious hospitals and laboratories, but, most importantly, I've found a love for learning.My love for learning and experience with failure is what sets me apart from many of my peers. I've found that the resiliency needed to succeed through adversity requires a positive vision of the potential ahead. In my previous tutoring experiences, this is what I have projected onto my tutees. It's always netted a more successful and confident student.In my most recent experiences, I've discovered that the idea of talent or inherent intelligence is a myth. My fellow students are similar enough in academic ability, but what differentiates one student from another is the commitment to their respective studies. Thus, I try to demonstrate to my tutees by example that being a committed student doesn't need to be painful. It can be simple and fun. However, patience and compassion is crucial in guiding a tutee as they learn this invaluable lesson. The result pays for itself when a student can ultimately solve problems on their own and discover the tricks to build confidence.

While obtaining my first doctorate, I filled the role of senior prosector in the anatomy lab, a task typically reserved for elite anatomists, which created a powerful self-realization and redirected my life's objective. My purpose gradually presented itself while investing copious amounts of hours into thinking, studying, and working with cadavers. An innate artistic ability not only allows me to captivate detail but also to refine the hand motor skills necessary to execute meticulous dissections of human specimens.I aspire to produce work that will outlive me and live by the statement of Ben Franklin, "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." Trained in science, I objectify uncertainty from a logical perspective. My artistic side allows me to reveal answers to scientific questions from an imaginative angle. With these character traits, I am able to weave the web of the scientific literature.By fearing what we are inside, there is little hope in accepting anything beyond ourselves. While I am receptive to the aesthetic beauty that is available to everyone, I also attempt to reveal a greater beauty by understanding the wondrous design beneath the skin of the noble men and women who have donated their bodies to science.

I have been working in the mathematics field on a professional level for the past seven years. After college, where I obtained my bachelor's degree in English and Creative Writing in order to gain a new, fresh perspective on liberal arts culture and the humanities, I realized my academic focus was better suited for the study and education associated with math. I've loved math ever since grade school, and I found myself actually looking forward to coming home and doing my math homework! I soon realized that what I was doing was not only fun, but had a purpose. I understood that it defines and shapes the way in which we go about our business navigating through the world. My admiration for its profound impact in this manner has only become stronger over the years. We use mathematical logic to arrive at unassailable truths about the world, algebra in representing mathematical language, and probability to make educated guesses on given occurrences. It goes on and on! Working with math is a fun, unique experience that I enjoy very much.I graduated Binghamton University with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Creative Writing. I then went on to Queens College, where I spent many years building my math credentials, taking undergraduate and graduate level courses in calculus, problem solving, math for business, and history of mathematics, to name a few. I entered into Queens College's graduate teacher education program, where I completed student teaching. I have hundreds of fieldwork hours in various schools observing teachers and colleagues at work, working on tutoring or group-organized instruction, and student teaching.I have worked in various summer camps over the years, and I work with students with special learning needs.

I'm very familiar with what courage it takes to ask for help in a subject because I have gotten tutoring for a subject I struggled with.
