During college, I worked on research projects in social sciences both at Northwestern and with the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, a nonprofit organization that advocates for policies designed to eliminate homelessness in Illinois.I have tutoring experience dating back to high school and am particularly interested in helping students with writing and SAT prep. During my undergraduate years, I tended to hang out with the math crowd, despite my status as a physics major. I joined math club at my university (NAU) and enjoyed subjects within math. Even today I will choose to read mathematics material over topics in science, which is a switch from my younger years. However, physics was the start of my passion for mathematics, and I hope share this sense of awe with you, or anyone I am teaching/assisting. I have been fortunate to have been given the opportunity to teach a calculus class, for two years, and every part of it has been rewarding. As a Varsity Tutor I will take the same pragmatic approach and attempt to ensure that you as the student not only arrive at the correct conclusion, but grasp the underpinnings of your decision. You will not just answer the question correctly but will be in possession of the deliberative thought process that impelled you to that correct answer. We all want the correct answer, we all want the 100% score; that is a given. But if you can obtain the correct answer AND develop a thought process that can be employed again and again to solve future problems then you have truly added to your knowledge base. My overall teaching philosophy is to engage the student and attempt to point out certain real world applications to material that one may deem (admittedly) sometimes a bit dry.
