...the curriculum is all about the "design thinking" framework for creative problem solving pioneered by the international design firm IDEO. While typically used in startups to develop new innovations, I've found it extremely handy in tutoring. Every student is different and so are their difficulties, so a finite set of ways to present a concept or tackle a difficulty is potentially limiting. In my experience, it's much more effective to use an adaptive framework like...

Recent North Bay IB Computer Science SL Tutoring Session Notes
We had a crammed session tonight: The student had 2 math assignments and 2 spelling assignments. We spent the entire time focusing on math (because of priority and difficulty). We clipped her completed homework to her planner.
I saw 3 completed assignments and signed the check-boxes in her planner. She had one more assignment that night, so once we see it complete we can giver her the 4th "check" and signature.
The student worked on word math problems. He also worked on greater than and less than problems. He also read a story. He worked on predictions and setting. He also did some cloze procedures for comprehension. I have seen a great improvement in his decoding skills. He is strong in math and works better if given a challenge.
I advised the student on her homework. We covered topics such as geometric sequences and formulas for solving them, such as the recursive and explicit formulas. We addressed word problems that used real-life examples as an application for these sequences, and the steps to solving such problems.
The student was a bit shy, but I think we still had a productive session. We went over all the different kind of verbal questions. We need to work on the reading comprehension. She can get most of the questions correct, but needs to work on her pacing and timing. She needs to go faster to get to more questions. I gave her some sections to work on in her spare time and told her to stick to the time limit. She should be better as she gets more comfortable with the format of the test.
We completed a practice test over the first couple of sections of the course. We then completed previous homework assignments to improve the students grade (radicals). We reviewed briefly over any material the student had questions on. The student has a comprehensive final on Monday (Last Session).
We reviewed most of the problems the student got wrong in the mathematics achievement portion of the test, focusing on the following: 1.) How to get the slope of a line, based on 2 coordinates, or on having the slope and 1 set of coordinates. We also reviewed the definition of slope, and how to determine, if given visual examples, which slope is increasing or decreasing at the highest rate. 2.) How to use the multiple choice answers given to solve a complicated problem, since that may be the simplest way of solving it. 3.) How to determine the area of a shaded region, such as the area outside of a circle inscribed within a square.
