I am a graduate of Drew University in Madison, NJ with a degree in English Literature. In my free time, I enjoy reading, running, and spending time with my family and friends. I spent several years working as a Writing tutor at UC Berkeley's Student Learning Center, where I helped both long-term and drop-in college students with all sorts of writing help, including essays (literary, scientific, critical, sociological), applications and admissions statements, and creative writing. I am a TV, film, and stage actor, and piano, trumpet, and guitar-player, and longtime creative writer. In regards to writing, nothing has been more educational and fulfilling than having my work published and produced. I used to run track and cross-country, but I am a little rusty these days. I like ballroom dancing, reciting Shakespeare, discussing films and plays, writing musical theatre, and singing. While studying for my Master's degree in Secondary and Special Education, I learned a lot about adolescent behaviors and learning styles (tweens & teens). This helps me to stay focused on the learning goals while catering to the individual learning style of the student, and that is why I prefer to teach 1 to 1 and to small groups instead of traditional classroom teaching.I dont use a cookie cutter approach, rather I adapt methodologies that show positive responses from the individual student. I dont carry a large student load because I really enjoy delving into the subject matter that I am teaching or tutoring and observing how students thinks their way through problems. Having completed many science and math courses in my academic career, I understand how daunting such courses can be. With that in mind, I make it a personal goal to provide students that I instruct with tools to help them understand complex material and to also personalize material so that they are engaged in the subject matter (especially in the areas of math and science). Each student has a different learning style and it is important to help students find theirs so that they may become confident and, more importantly, independent. It is my belief that good tutors "teach themselves out of a job" as we should help students learn how to tackle hard concepts with their own skill-set and in so-doing students become less reliant on tutors. I have past experiences tutoring students in levels of math up to college calculus (including preparation for advanced placement and regents examinations). Additionally, I have tutored World and United States History (including preparation for advanced placement and regents examinations) as well as preparation for the SAT and ACT.I find tutoring to be a very rewarding experience not just for myself but for my students- especially when I see the "light bulb" go off in someone's head and a concept that has been giving difficulties is finally understood!
