I recently relocated to Atlanta from Washington, DC, where I worked for several nonprofit organizations in both leading and supportive capacities. Over a period of two years, I worked with architecture and design students and recent graduates across the country. I visited nearly forty colleges and universities, encouraging students to engage their communities and find new ways to apply the knowledge and skills they acquire in the classroom.I am currently the Editor-in-Chief of Crit, the Journal of the American Institute of Architecture Students, a national peer-reviewed publication in which high school, college, and graduate students publish their written and design work. I also work as a college essay editor for an educational consultant based in Philadelphia. I am preparing applications to dual-degree graduate programs in city planning and law.I consider "co-learning" to be the most appropriate educational context, rather than a "master-apprentice" situation in which a student passively absorbs information. I seek to engage students in an active and participatory process, in which they consider me as an equal participant. Through critical dialogue, I seek to challenge students' perceptions and help them overcome barriers.I truly value knowledge and I am constantly seeking new opportunities to learn. I seek to strike a balance in life between work and leisure, sternness and light-heartedness, seriousness and whimsy. I understand well the pressures and stresses that students face, and I hope to alleviate some of these stresses on students' path to success.

As a native Houstonian, I am a proud product of the Houston Independent School District. Many of my best childhood memories occurred within the walls of Herod ElementarySchool, Sharpstown Middle School, and Lamar High School. I attended Texas SouthernUniversity's honors program majoring in Biology and am now a graduate student at theUniversity of Houston-Victoria studying Biomedical Science and Film. My mother, asmall-business owner/educator and my father, an electrical engineer instilled the value ofeducation in me at an early age. I learned a lot of my teaching style from them; patience, repetition, organization, and motivation to name a few. I began tutoring my cousins inmy youth who struggled with math, science, or english. In college, this continued as Itutored underclassmen in the biological sciences, organic chemistry, algebra, and writing. After graduation, I had a natural inclination to service students in the classroom as a highschool biology teacher for two years in HISD. Now, as I continue to pursue my academicendeavors in graduate school, I wish to be able to tutor and share my unique experienceswith our youth in hopes of enlightening their perspective of academia and life in general.I am fun loving, personable, and can relate to the younger generation through variouscommonalities; school, sports, music, social media and more. I look forward to meeting youand your child and taking his/her progress to the next level!

Teaching is one of my greatest passions. It is the way we ensure that the knowledge we worked so hard to gain is not lost to future generations. At this point, I have been teaching and tutoring for several years, and I love it now more than ever. My first teaching experience was teaching Electricity and Magnetism Physics, Nuclear Reactor Physics, and Thermodynamics to new nuclear power plant operators in the US Navy earning the certification of "Master Training Specialist." When earning my BS in Public Health and Epidemiology and completing my pre-medical coursework, I was often asked by my peers how I studied because I seemed to have a great understanding of the material. In helping my peers in my study groups, I began to realize a recurring theme - they didn't know how to approach learning in the Sciences. As a result, I found a niche and a passion in teaching in the science modalities. Over the course of the next couple of years, I was a TA in Organic Chemistry, and I was employed by the university to tutor students in Physics, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry. Now, I am a Doctor of Medicine candidate at Harvard Medical School, and I tutor 1st year medical students in Anatomy. I also write the clinical curriculum and teach for the Harvard Health Professions Recruitment and Enrichment Program (HMS HPREP), which teaches the science of the human body to high school children who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine. I think my greatest tutoring quality is that I always meet a student where he or she is and I do not go into a tutoring session with any preconceived notions about a current level of understanding. I am there to figure out where the difficulty in learning stems from and to find creative ways to help the student learn to problem solve in the context of his or her specific subject so that he or she may bridge that gap for themselves in the future. In the past, I have been very successful in these endeavors, which has and continues to be one of the most personally rewarding things I engage in. I hope that I will continue this by helping you achieve your learning goals so that we can continue to strengthen the fund of knowledge for the future.

I am a Brooklyn native who loves to travel and teach. Since completing my Bachelor's and Master's in Math Education at Hunter College/MaCaulay Honors College (2009), I spend most of my time doing volunteer work, private tutoring and teaching in public schools in New York City, but have also traveled as far as Thailand to follow my passion. I am a firm believer in the fact that every child can learn and that helping each child to do so is a combination team effort including himself and the educators and care takers in their lives. I like to encourage children to be unique and well rounded individuals that confidently feel they can contribute to their educational environment and successfully accomplish their personal best. I look forward to the opportunity to work with your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most 9th graders struggle with three interconnected areas: verb conjugation (especially present tense irregulars like être, avoir, and aller), building conversational vocabulary beyond textbook phrases, and developing listening comprehension with native speakers. Many students also feel self-conscious about pronunciation and speaking aloud in class, which limits their ability to practice the very skill they need most. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction addresses these pain points directly—tutors can focus extensively on whichever skill is holding a student back, whether that's mastering subjunctive mood or building confidence with spontaneous conversation.

In a typical 9th grade classroom, each student might speak French for just a few minutes per class period. With personalized tutoring, students get sustained, pressure-free speaking practice where they can make mistakes without worrying about peer judgment. Tutors can engage in real conversation at the student's level, correct pronunciation and grammar in the moment, and adjust difficulty on the fly. This consistent speaking practice—even just 30-60 minutes per week—builds the fluency and confidence that classroom settings rarely provide, since teachers must balance speaking time among 20+ students.

The most effective approach combines both. Students need to understand the logical patterns (like how -er verbs follow predictable conjugation rules) so they can apply them to new verbs, but they also need repeated exposure and practice to internalize irregular verbs like être, avoir, and aller. Expert tutors teach the rule or pattern first, then use spaced repetition and contextual practice—like using verbs in conversation or writing exercises—to help the conjugations stick. This blend prevents students from either blindly memorizing without understanding or getting lost in grammar explanations without enough practice.

Vocabulary retention improves dramatically when words are learned in context and used repeatedly across multiple skills. Rather than memorizing word lists, strong tutoring embeds new vocabulary into conversations, readings, and writing exercises. Tutors can also connect words thematically (food vocabulary, family vocabulary, school vocabulary) and have students practice them in sentences and dialogue. Spaced repetition—reviewing words at increasing intervals over time—is crucial; a tutor can weave previously learned vocabulary into new lessons to keep it active, which research shows is far more effective than studying isolated lists.

Understanding French culture isn't just enrichment—it's essential for developing real comprehension and communication skills. When students learn why French speakers use formal and informal "you" (tu vs. vous) or how conversational pacing differs from English, they understand the language more deeply. Culturally informed instruction also makes learning more engaging; discussing French music, cinema, food, or current events gives vocabulary and grammar lessons authentic context. Expert tutors can weave cultural elements naturally into lessons—discussing a French film to practice listening, exploring Quebec's unique culture, or talking about French holidays—which helps 9th graders see language as a living system, not just academic rules.

Many 9th graders mispronounce French sounds that don't exist in English (like the "r" sound, nasal vowels, or the distinction between "u" and "ou"). In group classroom settings, teachers often can't address individual pronunciation issues thoroughly. Tutors can isolate these sounds, model them clearly, have the student practice and self-correct, and provide immediate feedback. With consistent 1-on-1 practice, students build muscle memory for unfamiliar sounds and gain the confidence to speak without worrying they sound "wrong." This is especially important at 9th grade, when students' self-consciousness peaks but their ability to master new phonetic patterns is still excellent.

The best tutors combine fluency (ideally native or near-native level), experience teaching French at the 9th grade level, and the ability to meet students where they are—whether that's a beginner building foundational skills or an advanced student preparing for honors. Look for tutors who balance conversation with grammar instruction, can explain concepts clearly, and adapt to different learning styles. They should make students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes, since that's how language learners actually grow. Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who meet these criteria and work collaboratively to address each student's specific goals, whether that's improving a grade, preparing for a test, or simply building confidence with speaking.
