Session Summaries by Trigonometry Tutors

Bellevue, NE Trigonometry tutoring
The student and I worked on problems he received from his teacher for practice. The problems consisted of a review of the topics we previously covered (zeros of a polynomial, using transformations to graph a function) as well as new topics (finding the asymptote of a function). He found that the work was surprisingly easier than he originally thought. I feel that by the end of the session, he had a much better understanding.

During this session, we went over the test that the students took, which was on solving trigonometric equations (either by factoring or by substitution). They had the general understanding of how to approach each problem that involved only single trigonometric function; however, when given new problems of two functions (sin and cos or tan and cot), they had some difficulty with simplifying the problems so we went over this in detail. The students had a positive attitude throughout the session and were eager to participate in the discussion. During this session, I utilized the practice problems I found online, and at the end of the session, I assigned them four problems for homework. They said the test they took was harder than their review materials and they weren't sure if they did well on it. Nevertheless, the girls were confident while solving the practice problems during this session.

The student and I continued to work on her new trig material. Today we were doing more with the six trig functions on graphs, and going in both directions to find the degree measure and then also the result. She is doing really well with this, and the hardest part just seems to be the square roots! We will continue to work on this.

The student has several worksheets to go over. We discussed quadrilaterals and their different types such as square, rectangle, kite, trapezoid, and so on. We discussed how to tell if sides are parallel or perpendicular using their slopes. If the slopes are the same, they are parallel. If the slopes are opposite inverses, they are perpendicular.

The student is doing great with the material and shows a lot of confidence when going about solutions. My only concern is that sometimes she attempts multiple steps at once, which can slow her down or make otherwise simple problems more difficult than they need to be. I emphasized the importance of modeling her equations before attempting to solve the problem by force and told her to focus on determining important variables before starting the problem. We arranged our next session for this coming Tuesday in preparation for her next test, which I think she will do fine on. I also made sure to point out alternative forms of sequences which I think will help a lot in the next two chapters.

Bellevue, NE Trigonometry tutoring
This is our first session back again and we are essentially picking up where we left off with proving identities and solving various types of trig equations. When it comes to proving trig identities, I find that the student does better when she is not given particular steps to follow. For the majority of solving equations, it's a matter of putting together all the trigonometry knowledge, which is a bit overwhelming for her. After walking her through the worksheets, I believe she is getting better.
