Session Summaries by English Grammar and Syntax Tutors

Bellevue, NE English Grammar and Syntax tutoring
The student read a passage for a minute. We discussed reading smoothly, accurately, speedily, and with expression. After she read the passage twice, we graphed her first and second read. She and I then solved five math word problems together. I encouraged her to box or underline the key items or important numbers. We also underlined the questions. While solving these math word problems, she read them to me, marked them, and solved them with representations. After solving, I asked her to explain her thinking. We then practiced her multiplication. We discussed multiplication combinations that she already knew and strategies for the ones that she is still working on. Finally, we ended her session reading a chapter book called "The White Wolf." While she read, I encouraged her to read with expression and to sound out unknown words. We also used context clues to determine words that she did not know.

The student and I worked on the first two paragraphs of his essay on To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. He needed some help with phrasing his ideas in a way that flowed naturally, and also some help with organizing his ideas into cohesive paragraphs. His attitude toward the material seemed positive overall. I'm going to work to build his confidence in his writing ability over the next few weeks, and I also plan to support that confidence with real, tangible literacy skills that he can carry with him into his future.

We are now using graphic organizers with prompts to help organize her writing. The student seemed to had some difficulty with developing in a strong introduction. However, she does not give up and continued to try. I gave her another prompt to use with an organizer and for time. I also included an article to read to encourage expository reading.

We used the iPad to change up our learning today, and the student did well using it as a learning device. It was also helpful to see how much he actually knows, as he was able to sing along with the alphabet song and a few other nursery rhymes. We practiced the alphabet song and the finger songs several times. He did a good job of looking at the letters on the screen to match them to the sounds. We also used an episode where he had to identify the letters as they weren't presented in order. We also used one that went over different shapes and he had to find them in the pictures. There were circles, squares, triangles, diamonds, and hearts. His speaking has already progressed in a week, and he is catching on very quickly.

Once again, this session was very enjoyable. It was wonderful to see that the letter the student wrote last week to her father was actually delivered this week by the mailman. Today I brought her 3 books - one for fun, one for homework, and one that I read to her today. Wilma Unlimited, about the incredible life of Wilma Rudolph, was the book we worked with today. We first read a 2-pg biography of her - I read one paragraph, she read one. Then we discussed how the accomplishments in Wilma's life could be an example & encouragement to the student. I left her with a small writing assignment from this project. I also left her with the book Princess Grace for her to read this week and a form for her to complete a Book Report on it. Then, I graded her Math homework. Once again, she did a really great job. We reviewed the one concept that she had struggled with and practiced it some more. We also worked today on fractions - identifying them and adding them, focusing on improper fractions & mixed numbers. We also practiced adding together columns of 3 numbers and on different ways to understand the place value of numbers - using manipulatives and expanded numbers. Her homework includes reading, writing, and math, and I feel confident she will do well in all.

I worked with the students each independently. Student 1 and I discussed her recent writing project and read from "Little Women" to assess her reading comprehension skills, as well as her grasp of grammar and vocabulary. Student 2 and I discussed her favorite kinds of books and the type of writing she's doing in school. We then read from "Little Women" and talked about scene, dialogue, and climaxes in story structure. Student 3 and I talked about his favorite and least favorite types of reading and writing, and we read a short passage together. For next time, I will think of books and other materials to use in our sessions.
