Knowledge is imperative for not only personal, but also social and economic growth. As a tutor, I would like to disseminate this knowledge and teach students the valuable skills needed to independently obtain knowledge, create concepts, and build new ideas on those fundamental concepts. I graduated as a University Scholar and pre-med student from New York University with a major in Psychology and minors in Physics, Molecular and Cell Biology, and Chemistry. Having excelled in Psychology and its research, I am a member of the International Honor Society in Psychology; hence, I am well qualified to teach this subject. Because I am passionate about reading and writing, both creatively and academically, I have excelled in the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and MCAT and have often tutored peers facing difficulties in these areas. Although I struggled with Physics in high school, I approached it differently at NYU, was extremely intrigued by it, and decided to pursue a minor in it.This is the same kind of change I would like to bring about in my students through effective communication and personalized learning styles. There is no universal way to study, and understanding how a student learns new a concept is imperative to obtaining success in any field. I have taught young children, high school students, and college students topics like algebra, dance, and health education. Each age group positively responds to a different style of teaching, motivation, and communication; being adaptable and open to these changes is my forte. My teaching style often revolves around developing self-motivation, planning schedules, and understanding students' short-term and long-term goals. Because I recently graduated, I understand the stress students have managing their busy schedules, extracurricular activities, and studying for standardized exams, all while maintaining a solid GPA. Being flexible, compassionate, and patient is very important when teaching and I believe that an amalgamation of these traits, my teaching experience, and subject knowledge make me a well-rounded and effective tutor.

Over the span of 30 years of teaching at Elementary, Middle, and High School, my lessons have focused on active engagement of students in the learning process. Lessons are focused around group and individual work to assist in understanding and assessment of learning process. The environment is charged with a high amount of interaction between students to students, and students to teacher. Critical thinking is the norm in my teaching where students question, provide verbal and written feedback on the learning process. They assess and evaluate the effectiveness of my teaching strategies.

Elementary School Tutor • +11 Subjects

There is no question that education in this day and age is a privilege. Although there are thousands of students that attend school each year, under the same roof and in the same building together, the pathways that led them there look very diverse. For some, growing up, college was an expectation, rather than an exception. For others, the fight for admission was arduous and was pursued by a fight to remain accepted. I fall under the fight category.I am a first-generation college student, who worked vigorously to get where I am today. Most expected me to fall like generations before me, which drove me to excel. With hard work and dedication, I obtained my bachelor's in elementary education from Howard Payne University, surpassed my own goals, and became a responsible citizen, role model, and teacher to the younger generations. As an elementary teacher, I have been able to help young children develop social skills and positive learning habits in an enthusiastic, stimulating, and positive classroom environment. As an elementary educator, I have fostered the social and intellectual development of students, in hopes that one day, they too will also become a responsible community member. As most do, I grew older, married, and had children of my own. Upon having my son, he developed a medical condition which lead to multiple years in the Dell Children's Hospital, several specialist visits, and even more doctor visits. It was then that I realized that while I loved being in the classroom, I wanted to do more for children and build on my existing knowledge of the toddler and adolescent age group. Thus, I decided to pursue a second degree in Pediatric Nursing. In all, I have a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education, a General Studies degree, an Associate of Science degree, and I am currently working on my Doctorate of Nursing in Pediatrics.School was never easy for me, thus I had to find different learning styles for myself. This allowed me to better understand that while we are all working towards an educational goal, the learning styles we use to get there are very different. This is how I have learned to tailor different lesson plans and activities for the different learning styles of children, in Kinder through fifth grade and help themall succeed, while having fun! With my extensive background knowledge and my passion to help mold the younger generation, your scholar will be more than just a name in the system, as we will work together to build a relationship and learning style that best suits their needs! If your student is in Kinder - Fifth grade, let's get together and redefine learning into something positive and fun while ensuring their success!

AP Chemistry Tutor • +12 Subjects

Through God's grace I earned my Bachelor in Science degree from Winona State University in Winona, MN with a major in chemistry and specialize in chemistry tutoring. As a student at Winona State, I also participated in chemical research which I presented in 2018 at the 255th ACS National Meeting in New Orleans.First of all, I thank the LORD for my experience at Winona State and this opportunity at Varsity Tutors to teach and help students learn, grow, succeed, and take enjoyment in their studies. As a former student in chemistry, I have experienced the need for outside resources to help with mastering concepts and ideas, which allows me as a tutor to relate to my students by seeing the learning experience from their perspective and meeting their needs accordingly. It is my joy to contribute to student growth and success and enhance their learning experience. I believe that God lead me to Varsity Tutors because He gave me the gift of teaching, and working with students allows me to use my God given strengths to serve Him and pass on knowledge and wisdom to others. My tutoring philosophy can be described in two principles, or the "two commandments of teaching". The first is teaching to serve God, the second is teaching to serve the students, by instruction, encouragement and dedication to their growth and success. Also important is building a strong bond between the teacher and student. Jesus said the two greatest commandments are to love God and love others, and the same wisdom can be applied to teaching for God and students. Some of my interests outside of tutoring and learning chemistry include lifting weights, competitive running, and golf. It is important to keep the body strong and the apostle Paul says "physical training is of some value" (1 Timothy 4:8). But most important to my life is my relationship with God, and living in God's Word, and receiving wisdom from God. Our LORD instructed every one of us to "seek first his kingdom and righteousness" (Matthew 6:33). Some of my favorite Scriptures include Philippians 4:13, Colossians 3:23, and Ephesians 2:10.

Accounting Tutor • +10 Subjects

I received my BS from NYU in General Business and my Masters in International Marketing from NYU Stern. I have taken additional graduate level accounting courses and successfully completed 5 courses towards my teaching certificate at Felician. I have tutored English for Literacy Volunteers, trained bookkeeper and salespeople on the job. I have done some substitute teaching and have taught public speaking and leadership to the Jaycees.Currently I am tutoring ESL, reading and accounting. My favorite of these subjects is English and then reading. I emphasize how one has to have the vocabulary and how to use it. When someone doesn't understand me it is usually because I have not explained myself or because I failed to observe that the other person didn't register my message.I'll be there for you. We'll work together according to your learning style. I want you to feel comfortable and enjoy our sessions. Most of all I want you to succeed in your studies and in life. By the way, I am not overly serious and like to create a relaxed but effective atmosphere. A few laughs are helpful.I've tutored and trained individuals from ten to fifty years of age, based on a broad philosophic focus. Knowledge is the key to financial success and personal achievement in life. I, as the educator, must relate the subject to the widest possible context, making the subject more meaningful and useful. I must be patient and supportive. I must encourage and inspire. I must turn ambivalence and tolerance for learning into appreciation. And where there is an absolute dislike for a subject I must strive for appreciation or at least tolerance for it.In short, I endeavor to do more than just tutor subject knowledge. My reward is always a great sense of satisfaction.

I am a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology, receiving a Bachelors of Architecture with specializations in 'digital design' and 'history and theory'. Since, I have worked with a couple of architecture firms and am currently in the process of taking the architectural registration exams. I have been involved as a tutor since high school, working with middle and high schoolers in math from algebra to calculus, middle school band ensembles, writing skills and reading comprehension, as well as a variety of other subjects on a short-term basis. I was also able to teach in a more significant capacity through Breakthrough Central Texas' summer program in Austin. There, I received intensive training over three months, worked alongside aspiring teachers, and was able to develop as a teacher over a 12-week, full-day program. I worked primarily with 6th graders in math, reading, and writing, but also taught a drawing/comics class for 6th-12th graders. Our students came from areas that had shown a greater likelihood for their students to start, but not complete, their college-level education. Working with kids who were just starting their 11-year journey, students who were in college and with Breakthrough, and the staff who had been with those kids for years gave me a wonderful perspective on what education looks like for many across the country, and solidified the importance of a holistic education system. I hope to bridge this passion with my architectural background in the near future, but in this moment where our schools and teachers are under an even-greater strain, I hope to help relieve some of that by assisting students where I can. My areas of greatest expertise are anything related to architecture, maths through trigonometry, writing and reading comprehension, and music (trumpet for more-advanced musicians, all brass for beginner/intermediate musicians). With any subject, I believe the most effective way to make meaningful progress is by continually making connections to other areas of knowledge and interest. This approach broadens the ways a student understands a concept, allowing for analysis and questioning that is more authentic and effective for that student's understanding of a concept. This is an approach to learning that I picked up while working in Austin, and have used ever since, making learning situations more enjoyable in the moment and more likely to stick around after the immediate need for that knowledge. For me, I am always relating a new concept or topic back to what I know about architecture, structures, materials, and urban design because of my everyday work; but, also thinking about how they might play into music composition and production, film writing and creation, cooking and nutrition (gave me a whole new frame for chemistry and biology), and sports (there aren't too many physics questions that can't be visualized in soccer). Please give my resume a look for more on my experiences and skills.

From my earliest high school years, I have had a passion for languages- studying Spanish, Italian, French, and German simultaneously by my senior year and continuing studies with Japanese and Russian before finishing high school. During high school, I tutored in Spanish and French.I received my BA from Georgetown University where I had begun my studies in the School of Languages and Linguistics and then later transferred to the College of Arts and Sciences to expand my studies to include International Economics and disciplinary studies via the Georgetown School of Foreign Service. During my undergraduate time, I lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I studied Political Science, International Economics, and Literature in addition to working in an International Consulting agency. I thrived during my time there socially and academically- researching for two theses to complete my undergraduate studies, with one in Spanish. During my time at Georgetown, I also studied Portuguese and tested at the high proficient level. Finally, I completed my Spanish certification while answering political science questions to a board of Spanish Faculty Professors- scoring the second highest level of fluency in Spanish with distinction for Foreign Service-Political Science knowledge. My Master's degree is in Latin American Studies from UCLA where I studied the economic, social and political science trends- specifically focusing on South America.Since graduating, I have been in sales- mostly commercial financial consulting and look forward to helping share experiences and mentoring in the same consultative style by learning strengths and challenges faced by each student and determining action plans to succeed together- not just teaching a lesson, but ensuring the lesson is active, engaged, and memorable to be enjoyed and lived thereafter.

ACT Prep Tutor • +52 Subjects

I earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina in 2013. I double majored in Chemistry and Mathematics on top of completing a Pre-Med track that included biology and physics courses. For the past year I've worked in a research lab studying childhood leukemia, and I plan on attending medical school in the next year. I specialize in tutoring a broad range of subjects including chemistry, biology, and physics, as well as math subjects like algebra and calculus. I also tutor for standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, AP tests, and the MCAT. I sincerely believe that while some of the concepts presented in these subjects and tests seem initially very difficult, they become much less intimidating if you have the confidence and perspective to look at the problems from the right angle. They don't have to be so challenging! I like to connect on students' levels and help them to find that confidence. In my free time I enjoy playing guitar and collecting music, reading, and spending time outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varsity Tutors' Other category covers a broad range of academic subjects beyond traditional core areas, including test preparation (GRE, GMAT, LSAT), professional certifications, specialized academic subjects, and skills-based courses. Whether you're preparing for a standardized test, need help with a niche subject, or want to develop specific academic skills, we can connect you with tutors who specialize in these areas. Each tutor brings expertise tailored to your unique learning goals.

In a classroom, teachers typically pace instruction for the average student, which means some students move too quickly while others fall behind. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to adapt their teaching to your specific learning style, speed, and needs. Tutors can spend extra time on challenging concepts, skip material you've already mastered, and use examples relevant to your interests—creating a customized learning experience that leads to faster progress and deeper understanding.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors across all skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced learners. Whether you're starting fresh with a new subject, preparing for a major exam, refining specialized knowledge, or aiming for mastery, tutors can meet you where you are. During the matching process, you'll share your current skill level and goals so you get connected with someone experienced in helping students at your specific stage.

Research shows that personalized 1-on-1 instruction significantly boosts learning outcomes compared to classroom-only instruction. Tutors help by breaking down complex material into digestible steps, identifying and addressing specific knowledge gaps, providing targeted practice, and offering immediate feedback. This focused, responsive approach accelerates progress and builds confidence—especially valuable for challenging or specialized subjects where students need expert guidance tailored to their unique questions and learning pace.

Getting started is straightforward. Simply share your subject, current skill level, and learning goals with Varsity Tutors. We'll match you with a tutor who has the right expertise and teaching style for your needs. Once matched, you'll work with your tutor to set up a schedule and begin personalized instruction. Many students see measurable progress within the first few sessions as tutors tailor their approach specifically to how you learn best.

Yes. Varsity Tutors understands that students have packed schedules. You'll work directly with your tutor to find session times that work for both of you, whether that's early mornings, evenings, or weekends. Most students find that even consistent 1-2 hour sessions per week produces noticeable improvement. Your tutor can also adjust frequency based on your progress and upcoming deadlines or exams.

Good tutors track progress through multiple measures: improved scores on practice tests or assignments, deeper understanding of concepts you previously struggled with, increased confidence when tackling difficult material, and better performance in actual coursework or exams. Your tutor should regularly check in on what's working and adjust the approach if needed. Most students notice concrete progress—whether that's higher test scores, clearer comprehension, or greater independence with the material—within the first month of consistent tutoring.
