I am a Grad Student studying to become a middle school Earth Science teacher in Richmond, Virginia. I graduated from Whitman College in 2016 and relocated to Richmond in 2018 to work in a print shop. I've loved being an artist, but I've always wanted to teach Special Ed and Earth Science. I am currently pursuing a masters in teaching to be placed in Title 1 schools and plan to pursue a dual certification in Special Ed.I think science is the coolest but it is also very tough, I experienced plenty of my own academic struggles in my journey towards becoming a science teacher. I am thrilled to work with any student towards making science more approachable.

For the past three years, I have worked as a Texas Realtor and as the director of an education advocacy program. I am passionate about supporting others in their journeys towards advocating for others: which is how I view the role of a realtor and engaged community member. I believe deeply in the power of education as a tool towards justice, and hope to share my love for learning with my students.I am a graduate of Texas Christian University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with minors in religion and business, and an emphasis in comparative race and ethnic studies.

I graduated from the International Baccalaureate School at Bartow, with enough credits to be granted the IB Diploma. As part of the graduation requirements, I had to have at least 150 hours of various community service types. Over 120 of these hours were logged in tutoring a group of 4th graders, which is where the most of my experience in tutoring has stemmed from.]I am currently working towards a bachelor's degree in Computer Science at the University of central Florida.I am tutoring mainly in three subjects: Computer Science (General/AP/IB), Spanish (General/AP/IB), and IB English Language/Literature. My favorite one to teach is Computer Science, as it tends to be the easiest one to teach, and has many practical applications outside of a learning environment.Many of my lessons will involve breaking concepts down to their core mechanics, teaching the subject from a ground-up perspective, and incorporating examples and exercises for the student to use. The lessons need to be presented in a manner that is not so complex that the student feels overwhelmed, but also not so simple that the student feels patronized and stops learning.Outside of tutoring, my interests involves writing, reading, playing games and socializing with friends.

Western Illinois University is where I earned my Bachelor's of Business and my MBA. When I was working on my Bachelor's of Business, I knew I wanted to be a professor some day, but did not want to be a professor that had no life experiences in the field. 13 years after completing my Bachelor's degree, I started my PhD in Management at the Maharishi University of Management (now called Maharishi International University). The school is accredited, located in Iowa. It focuses on sustainability and meditation. 85% of the college is international, so I was a minority. The experience was great.Management and Marketing are the areas I focus on in business. I also am a licensed real estate broker for Illinois only. (Each state has their own test/requirements).I have been teaching full-time at the college level for 11 years. Business is a dynamic field. In my classes, I bring in a lot of current events so students can understand theories and how they are applied. Participation by the students are crucial as it helps me to better learn how to teach material in a way that students can better understand the material.Outside of teaching full-time for a job, I also have a daughter that is now a freshman. I help her whenever she needs it - which is sometimes harder to do since kids seem to know how to push your buttons and when they are already frustrated, it makes it that more difficult. LOL.I have 2 dogs and 3 cats that may make an appearance during a session. All of them have been rescued and have a story of their own. If money were no issue, I would have a rescue farm for all types of animals.Hope I can help!

Tutoring has been a passion of mine for many years. I began tutoring in high school, where I tutored my peers in algebra, geometry, and Spanish and met weekly with a third grade girl to help her with her math and reading homework. I loved everything about it; it was so rewarding to get to know each student and watch them grow more confident in their abilities to tackle their schoolwork and problem-solve on their own. It was fascinating to witness the ways different people think, and I loved the challenge of adjusting my tutoring style accordingly. This passion led me to pursue a career in making education more effective for all students.To pursue this goal, I majored in cognitive science and minored in child development and computer science at Tufts University. My major taught me about how the brain works, and how it learns most effectively. With this background, I bring scientifically tested learning, memorization, and studying techniques to my tutoring sessions. I also minored in child development to better understand how brains learn differently across the lifespan; as a result, I understand ways to tailor my tutoring practice to the age of the student I'm working with. For example, the brain becomes much better at thinking abstractly over time as it becomes able to hold more pieces of information in mind at once. Thus, when tutoring younger children, it's helpful to rely much more on pictures and other visuals so the young learner doesn't have to maintain all the information from the discussion in their heads. My minor in computer science stemmed from my desire to pursue a career in educational technology. Technology can make learning more interactive and engaging for students no matter the subject, and I am interested in designing software that makes the learning process fun. Next September, I will begin working toward my Masters in Computer Science at Northeastern University to work toward this goal.After my tutoring experiences in high school, I had numerous experiences tutoring learners of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. I spent my first year of college tutoring preschoolers in reading comprehension and alphabet knowledge; I served as the curriculum writer and head teacher of a computer programming camp for children aged 4-7, using the ScratchJr programming language; I was a writing tutor for three years as I worked with other Tufts students on their term papers; I taught introductory Spanish classes to adult men who were immigrating from Africa to Spain; And lastly, I was a T.A. for a statistics course in my senior year of school, where I helped college students learn statistical concepts as well as the programming language R. All of these experiences are detailed in-depth on my resume.Of these experiences, I would have to say that my work tutoring writing and computer science have been my favorite. Both subjects offer a lot of room for students to put their own, personalized touch on their work, which lends itself well to my personal tutoring style. I ask students a lot of questions during tutoring sessions rather than simply telling them the answers, as this helps guide students to develop thought processes they can use to problem-solve on their own in the future. In addition, it helps the student talk through the material and reveals where they may have some misunderstandings. There are many right ways to write a program or a paper, so when I tutor subjects like writing and computer science, I get to make these questions more open-ended and help students let their creativity flow. This is harder in subjects like math, where there is only one right answer, but I still enjoy asking students questions as we puzzle through challenging questions and plan out approaches to word problems together. No matter the subject, I view myself as a partner to the student as they make their way toward mastery of the material.I look forward to working with you!
