I am a PhD student in Pharmacology at the University of Virginia. Previously, I attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota and earned a B.S in Biochemistry. It was during my undergraduate career that I became interested and passionate about teaching. I found the process of helping others understand material I loved, to be exhilarating. As a graduate student I had limited opportunities to pursue tutoring. As such, I have joined Varsity Tutoring and am SO excited for the chance to get back into teaching students AND learning from them.I am a scientist so, I love tutoring students in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, microbiology and many other topics. I also enjoy history.When I am not in school, you can find me cooking, reading or playing with the dog my boyfriend and I share. I am a graduate of the University of Texas-Arlington. I was fifteen when I began my studies there; and, after changing majors, I received BS degrees in both Physics and Biology. I then received a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed my residency in New York City. Although I primarily tutor math and science subjects, I have a broad range of interests including sports, music, art, literature, history, movies, and even television shows. In addition to extensive personal travel in both the United States and abroad, I was an exchange student at Sheffield University in England during college. All of these experiences have provided me with many opportunities to learn about and form friendships with people from many different backgrounds and cultures. I'm currently a practicing resident physician in Phoenix, AZ.I'm sure it's uncommon to find a full-time physician, wanting to tutor on the side, but my passion in tutoring and mentoring is deeply rooted in my experiences during my academic pursuit. As a student who struggled through middle school and high school, I was lucky to have encountered great tutors and mentors who aided and provided me the tools to become successful in academia and my personal life. As I worked as an engineer, I continued to privately tutor college students, and taught MCAT and college prep courses. I began teaching biological and medical science courses as I progressed through my medical school education, honoring in numerous classes. As a former rhythmic gymnastics trainer for young girls and private tutor, I love to share my skills and knowledge in all areas of my expertise. I understand the patience that comes with explaining problems to or training a student who may have never seen the subject before or has been taught incoherently. I specifically love tutoring math and physics because I myself have witnessed teachers or professors who have unmotivated students to continue further studies in those subjects with the use of unclear and didactic teaching methods. Math and physics is not so scary! To me it was more like learning a new language. I finished my baccalaureate in physics with a math minor. I have also done very well on standardized tests, not strictly because of my analytical knowledge but mostly because of the test taking skills I have aquired. I hope to pass on these skills so students don't have to waste time retaking standardized tests and parents don't have to cover as many fees. I scored 790/800 on the math portion of the SAT on my first try! More importantly, I hope to pass on my love for math and physics, and show more students the hidden simplicity and beauty within the notoriously scary subjects.

The mind is like a muscle that must be trained in a progressive manner. In math, this would mean NOT moving on too quickly from one concept to the next, which is what separates good math teachers from the not so good ones. I make absolutely sure my students have internalized step A and can perform it by themselves before moving onto step B. Like the floors of a building, math concepts build on each other and must be fully understood so the structure remains stable.In short, knowing and teaching are two different things. I know my Algebra and Geometry through and through, but perhaps most importantly, I have a knack for teaching it as well, with efficiency. I connect well with people, and am committed to making sure my students strive for success.
