We spent a large portion of our time together working through problems on math online. I like the format of the program and the fact that it rewards students with prizes when they complete problems, but she was quick to start working on problems that were too easy for her. This site will be a great resource if someone can make her do the hard problems instead! After that, she and I worked through her reading homework, which didn't take very long. She was focused and she worked hard for the first half or so of our session. I agree with her mother that giving the student breaks between tasks seems to help, as does offering a reward when she completes assignments she doesn't want to do.

The student had questions about a recent trigonometry quiz, so tonight we went over the quiz and corrected her errors. Fortunately, most of the errors were easily correctable. She seemed to internalize my clarifications very quickly.

The student and I worked on measurements and using scaling factors in drawing representations of furniture dimensions within a room. He understood how to do the work but needed to get a better grasp on the core concepts of scaling. After some discussion he picked up on this quite quickly. In addition, thanks to the urging of his grandmother, I am now making sure that the student understands why he is learning what he's learning and its possible applications. Now, after our session, we review and discuss what was learned and why. I also heard that the student got a sterling review in his parent-teacher conferences with marked improvement in reading and math. This does not surprise me and I am very happy with his progress. However, I do not wish to try to go ahead in the student's work both because I think he does not need to be pushed further and I do not wish to confuse him. I think the work we are doing is working and is best left alone.

Tutoring review by Angelique in East Chastain Park, GA
The student and I have progressed through his online class well. Last week we spent most of our session discussing lateral area, triangular similarities, and the surface areas of composite shapes. By the end of our session we had gone over most of his Unit 6 quiz material. He had some good questions pertaining to the calculation of a radius when only given the volume of several types of geometrical shapes. He is slightly behind on the schedule that I arranged for him in order to finish on time, though we have discussed what needs to be done in order for him to get on track. He has two more units to complete in the next two weeks so we are taking a more aggressive approach. Tomorrow I plan on getting him up to speed on the material that's coming up. We will also work on his next quiz material.
