Hi! I'm here to help you master math and science. I am a full-time professional educator (since 2018) with a Master's in Chemistry from Utah State University. While there, I taught over 2,000 students and received the Robins Award for Graduate Teaching (USU's highest honor for graduate instructors). This means I don't just know the material, I know how to teach it. I specialize in making "hard" subjects approachable for Middle School, High School, and College students, including challenging college-level "weed-out" courses: Chemistry: (General, Organic, Honors, and AP), Biology: (General, Honors, and AP), Physics: (Conceptual and Algebra-based), Math: (Middle School through College Algebra), and SAT & ACT Prep: All sections. I help students reach elite score tiers, including the 30s on the ACT (and equivalent SAT scores). My approach is patient and easygoing. I focus on "the why" to build real confidence. Let's work together!

I graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in German from Utah State University, with minors in Latin, Linguistics and Music Performance. During my studies I began tutoring other university students of all levels in both German and Latin. Assisting language students has been a joy for me since the beginning, and an endeavor I have been eager to continue pursuing. There's something unique and inherently wonderful about the ability to express thoughts in multiple languages. Often times there is no translatable comparison, and it's through these discoveries that I have been able to truly understand a seemingly foreign culture. I am also an accomplished pianist with a classical background, and very much enjoy teaching piano to students of any level. As an undergraduate teaching assistant for college level Music Theory and Keyboard Harmony courses over multiple semesters, I am also happy to teach musical interpretation and theoretically informed performance practice. In the near future I plan to return to formal studies in the field of Linguistics to earn a Doctorate, and in the interim I have begun teaching myself computer science and programming languages. In this modern technocentric world, I hope to study the meeting of these two fields.

Having been immersed in the educational field for some time now, I have a very strong interest in cultivating my passion for teaching. I have a substantial amount of experience working at the elementary, high school, and undergraduate levels in Classical Latin language, as well as Etymology and supplemental Latin tutoring. In the past, I had worked as an assistant and subject Latin tutor for primarily undergraduate students while attending University of Puget Sound and then Utah State University. More recently, I was given a wonderful opportunity to create my own Latin Curriculum and class at the K-7th Grade school, Fayette Street Academy, located in Santa Fe, NM.Due to this experience I had to relearn and re-frame how I taught Latin. This is especially the case at Fayette when Middle-schoolers don't see the benefits of studying a "dead language." Therefore, I wasn't challenged academically as much as I was with the undergraduate students at the aforementioned universities, but I was challenged in making this Latin approachable and pragmatic for the future academic careers of my students. I considered how important Latin is for building any student's resume. There are studies done that show how students with experience in Latin have a substantially better opportunity of being accepted to their desired College. Thus, I created my class in a way where I bridged the language and history of late antiquity, with supplemental units discussing etymology in order to show the students the modern day use of Latin. As a result I have exceptional class participation and engagement in the subject, so much so that I have to be proud of their desire to learn Latin.Teaching at Fayette has been the most meaningful experience of my life. It changed my career path from the medical field to education. I love Latin, and I feel like I can imbue my future students with the same passion I have for it. Thank you so much for your time. I look forward to speaking with you.Although my past year's experience in Latin might be rather specific, I also have extensive experience in providing online tutoring services via Grade Potential and Varsity Tutors, of which I've served as an on-going contract tutor for various subjects.

Corporate Engineering to Elementary Education Teacher/Tutor I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Systems from Utah State University and an MBA from The University of Phoenix-Provo Utah campus. For over 15 years, I worked in the corporate computer engineering field as a Novell Master Network Engineer (MCNE) and Master Network Instructor (MCNI), navigating the complexities and innovations of this dynamic industry. Despite my dedication and expertise, I experienced the challenge of being laid off twice in the span of 16 months. This period of uncertainty led me to a new path that would profoundly shape my professional journey. Following these layoffs, I transitioned to become faculty as an online professor at the University level, where I found my true passion. I began working as a Business and Information Systems and Business Professor for The University of Phoenix Online program and DeVry University Online. This role allowed me to refine my teaching skills, enhance my computer expertise, and develop effective online communication strategies. After ten years in this role, I made the best decision of my career I began substitute teaching at an elementary school. From the moment I stepped into the classroom, I was captivated by the joy and fulfillment that came from teaching young minds. The first day was transformative; I knew then that I wanted to become an Elementary teacher. I committed myself to this new goal, teaching during the day and taking Elementary Education Pedagogy courses from various universities in person and online at night. Through perseverance and dedication, I successfully completed all the necessary courses and tests, earning a current Utah Teaching License for grades 1-8 with an ESL endorsement. The last three years, during the Covid-19 pandemic, presented unique challenges and opportunities. Due to health issues, I was privileged to teach 3rd grade completely online through our local school district. This experience further honed my ability to adapt to changing environments and utilize technology effectively in education. With over 25 years of experience teaching and tutoring both adults and elementary-aged students, I recently retired from full-time teaching in May 2023. I am now excited to join Varsity Tutors, where I aim to continue my passion for learning and teaching. I believe that education is a lifelong journey and that we should strive to learn new skills and lessons every day. My philosophy is that if we aren't learning and moving forward, then we are moving backwards.

My teaching (and tutoring!) philosophy is that students will learn best when they are confident in their ability to grow academically, and comfortable to ask questions or admit when they need help. My philosophy also focuses on the importance of how the teacher presents themselves and the energy that they carry. I believe it is a teacher's responsibility to create a safe, calm, and student-oriented learning environment that is not rushed, angry, or impatient. I believe I am a top candidate as a tutor because I have a M. Ed. in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Psychology, and 7 years of classroom experience. I understand that scheduled time with a student is not to be wasted, or rushed. I do not believe in taking phone calls, texts, doodling, reading, etc. when working with a student. I am an experienced professional that loves her job, and I understand how important it is to the student and their families, that I do my job properly and effectively. If there is ever anything that I am unsure of, I will be truthful and say that I don't know, instead of providing students with the wrong information. Consistency, patience, communication, professionalism, and encouragement are what I look forward to offer as a tutor!

Frequently Asked Questions

Tutors who studied at Utah State University bring both academic expertise and real-world experience from one of the region's leading research institutions. Many hold degrees in their subject areas and have completed advanced coursework, giving them deep knowledge of the material they teach. Beyond credentials, these tutors understand the rigor of USU's curriculum and can effectively guide students through challenging concepts using proven teaching methods.

A tutor with a USU background brings insider knowledge of how to succeed in rigorous coursework. They've navigated similar challenges, understand common misconceptions in their field, and can share strategies that worked for them. Research on 1-on-1 instruction shows that personalized teaching significantly accelerates learning—and when your tutor has walked the same academic path, they can tailor explanations to match how you learn best.

USU alumni tutors excel across STEM fields, business, engineering, agriculture, and natural sciences—reflecting Utah State's strengths as a research university. You'll also find tutors with expertise in liberal arts, education, and humanities. When you connect with Varsity Tutors, we match you with a tutor whose background aligns with your specific subject and learning goals.

Yes. Tutors with a USU education often have experience preparing students for SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and subject-specific exams. They understand test strategy, time management, and how to build the foundational skills that lead to strong scores. Personalized test prep with a tutor has been shown to produce significantly better results than self-study alone, especially when the tutor can identify your specific weak areas and target them strategically.

When you contact Varsity Tutors and mention your interest in connecting with a USU graduate, we take that into account during the matching process. We consider the tutor's background, subject expertise, teaching style, and your learning needs to find the right fit. The goal is to connect you with someone who not only has the academic credentials but also understands your goals and can support your success.

Absolutely. When students work with a tutor who has succeeded in the same subject area and understands the pathway to mastery, it reinforces that success is achievable. A USU-educated tutor can model effective problem-solving, share how they overcame difficult concepts, and provide encouragement based on their own experience. This combination of credibility and relatability often helps students develop greater confidence in their abilities.

Yes. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who offer flexible scheduling to fit your life. Whether you need help with ongoing coursework, exam prep, or a specific project, you can arrange sessions that work for you.
