Comfort is key. If a student isn't comfortable enough to ask for clarification, they won't learn to their fullest potential. I've formally learned Latin for 3 years, French for 4 years, and Spanish for 7 years. With all my time as a student, I've been in the situation where I was too afraid to ask questions, lest I look a little dumb in front of my teacher and peers. This is why, during the last three years up to the present, as a tutor I focus primarily on a welcoming environment. If you are comfortable with your surroundings and with your tutor, you can more easily learn any language! I earned my B.A. from Willamette University in Spanish, French, and Anthropology. Because linguistics is my passion, I became a tutor so I can help students improve in the language they are studying, whether it's for a language requirement or it's for their own understanding and comprehension in communicatin in the language. I tutor Spanish, French, Latin, and ESL to almost any level. This includes those who are currently taking language learning courses, or those who want to learn a language in their free time! I can help with your curriculum (explaining textbooks, homework, essays, etc.) and/or make lesson plans specific to your needs. I have the most experience aiding young adults. I'm happy to work with middle school levels and upward. My tutoring style emphasizes grammar first - because of this, I usually do not practice with younger children in an immersion-style process, though I do, very much, encourage it. Conversation is an essential aspect of learning a language, and I love to help students who are learning a foreign language with conversation, but I can only help if they're learning the grammar behind it as well.
