About Me

After I graduated from high school I decided to study history education at Western Washington University in Bellingham. Two years later I realized my passion for physics and transferred to Colorado State University in Fort Collins to complete my Bachelor of Science degree in physics there. In the last year of my undergraduate study I started working as a physics tutor for the department. After graduating, I made the decision to take a personal year away from academia before I went to graduate school. During that year I moved to Chicago Illinois with my girlfriend and continued to tutor. I now am working on my masters in nuclear engineering and engineering physics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Aside from being a tutor I enjoy my time with friends playing board games and trying all the new restaurants that I now find myself in the vicinity of. I love ice hockey and all things outdoors; especially biking, hiking, and skiing. My passion is nuclear fusion so I take a very practical approach to tutoring math and sciences.

Q&A with Evan

The key word here is confidence. When a student is struggling in a subject, they can begin to feel very incapable and unmotivated. No one wants to do something which they are certain they will fail at. I try to build confidence in two ways. First I will always give praise for answers done correctly. Second, I try not to use the words "that's wrong". Instead I will tell a student that I understand why they would put that answer -- it's a common and easy misunderstanding -- then I would present an alternative way to think about the problem. I find that getting a student's mentality to switch from "I'm a failure" to "the subject is hard but I can do it" does wonders for keeping them confident and engaged.
