Who needs tutoring?
No obligation. Takes ~1 minute.

I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.

I am an incoming first-year medical student with a deep passion for the human body and mind. As a student who thrived with tutoring, I love teaching students how to think about problems and answer tough questions.
I am a recent magna cum laude graduate of Duke University and a full-time educator in North Carolina. I have a passion for helping young people figure things out and have experience writing professionally.
I am currently a student at Duke University studying Biomedical Engineering and Economics. Just a little bit about me and some of my interests. Some of my favorite academic interests include memoirs and modern classics. I think Catcher in the Rye is still one of my all time favorite books but Percy Jackson, a modern classic, is up there too. Beyond academics, I take great guilty pleasure in watching TV shows such as Westworld, Sherlock, How I Met Your Mother, and even The Bachelorette when I'm at a low point.
I am a sophomore at Duke University studying computer science and physics. Academically, I am drawn towards disciplines that employ logical problem-solving. I enjoy working with others to discover new intuitive ways of understanding problems.
I am currently doing research on personalized therapies for glioblastoma brain tumors at the Duke Medical Center, before I continue on to medical school. I love to swim, walk my pug dog, and hang out with family and friends in my free time. I hope I can help you in your studies. I look forward to working with you!
I am a rising senior at Duke University. I major in Computer Science and am also getting a minor in Physics. I have had experience tutoring/teaching as a teaching assistant for three classes: Intro to Databases, Electricity and Magnetism (for engineers), and Computer Network Architecture. I have had industry experience in software development as an intern for IBM and a cybersecurity analyst for TIAA. Outside of school/work, I play the piano and train with the Duke Taekwondo Club. I have a strong background in computer science, physics, and math, but I love learning about and helping students with a wide variety of subjects!
I am a freshman at Duke University in the Pratt School of Engineering. I plan on majoring in Civil or Environmental Engineering, as well as Economics. While I am qualified to tutor a range of subjects from math and science to ACT prep, I get the most excited when working on improving a student's writing because it is such a beautiful process. Sparking students' curiosity and excitement is the most rewarding part of tutoring, and I make it my mission to achieve that with all students I work with. In my free time, I am involved in a variety of groups on campus such as the triathlon club, FEMMES (a female-oriented STEM tutoring club), and The Chronicle, which is Duke's student newspaper. I also enjoy reading, running and baking all sorts of delicious delicacies.
I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Duke University. I received my Bachelor's degree in History and my Master's degree in Religious Studies. Since graduation I have tutored students in American History and Biblical Hebrew, which were exceedingly rewarding experiences. I am especially passionate in helping students learn to think critically, and enjoy the process of learning. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most enthusiastic about tutoring in History and Writing because these subjects utilize skills that students will use and cultivate throughout their lives and are applicable for many careers. I would describe my teaching philosophy as hands on and project-based learning. I strive to include fun and relevant videos, songs, and activities into my curriculum to ensure the engagement of my students. Outside of academia I like painting, baking, hiking, photography, and having game nights with friends.
I am an avid rower and bicyclist. I also greatly enjoy growing vegetables and playing basketball.
I am proficient at US History and can help an AP US History student towards a 4 or 5 on his or her exam. My concentration for both of my post-high school degrees was religion, and I would love to tutor students who are taking religion courses. My favorite hobby is reading, and I believe it is important to instill an enjoyment of reading in students as early as possible. I can help young people who need extra support to become better readers.
I am a Marshall Scholar and will begin graduate studies at the University of Cambridge in the fall.

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Hickory's 17 schools with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Hickory City Schools district or nearby, we match them with tutors who understand North Carolina's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.
Tutors work directly with students on North Carolina Standard Course of Study objectives, whether that's mastering grade-level math concepts, building reading comprehension skills, or preparing for EOC (End of Course) exams. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to identify exactly where a student is struggling and fill those gaps before they compound, which is especially valuable in a classroom setting where teachers manage ratios like Hickory's 14.8:1 average.
Students in Hickory frequently seek help with math (especially algebra and geometry), English language arts, science, and test prep for standardized assessments. We also work with students on foundational skills, homework support, and subject-specific challenges that come up across Hickory's schools.
The first session focuses on understanding your student's strengths, challenges, and goals. The tutor will assess where they stand academically, discuss what's not clicking in the classroom, and create a personalized plan to help them succeed. This foundation allows the tutor to tailor instruction to your student's learning style from day one.
Many students see noticeable progress within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on the subject, the student's starting point, and how frequently they meet with their tutor. Regular sessions combined with practice between meetings create momentum—research on 1-on-1 instruction shows it's one of the most effective ways to accelerate learning and close achievement gaps.
Varsity Tutors connects students with expert tutors who have subject expertise and teaching experience. Each tutor is vetted and matched based on the student's needs—whether that's a teacher familiar with North Carolina standards, a subject specialist, or someone with specific test prep experience. You can discuss your student's needs, and we'll find the right fit.
Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and how frequently your student meets with their tutor. We work with families to create a plan that fits their budget and schedule. Contact us to discuss your student's needs and get personalized pricing information for Hickory.
