I am a licensed physician from Florida who is currently changing careers. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009 and have extensive tutoring and editing experience. While a student, I became a certified writing tutor through the Critical Writing Department. Since I completed my writing requirement at the University prior to matriculating, I was the first freshman tutor to be accepted into this selective program. The tutoring program involved a preliminary peer-tutor training course prior to beginning tutoring, in order to certify that I had the appropriate background to provide professional feedback to fellow students on their literary works and projects. After graduation, I worked for a full-service learning center where I created and implemented high school lesson plans for home-schooled students, provided academic support for students ranging in ages from 8 to 20 years old, and taught group and individual standardized testing preparation classes. I have also assisted students with application essays for various undergraduate and graduate programs.

I'm passionate about guiding high schoolers through the college application process. The admissions process is probably one of the most confusing, anxiety-inducing experiences you'll have in high school, but I'm full of ideas for making the entire process as successful and stress-free as possible. I've successfully guided many students through every stage of admissions -- from figuring out where to apply and then staying organized and on-track, to "packaging" themselves and producing a perfect personal statement -- and I love witnessing them achieve their admissions dreams.

I was very involved in my high school's honor societies and band program, and through these have taught many students, be it in music or academics. I have also worked as a Graphic Designer, both for volunteer work as well as paid gigs, and have proficiency in Photoshop and Illustrator. Likewise, I have studied writing since high school and was the Editor-in-Chief for Valencia College's Phoenix Magazine, in which I wrote, edited, and revised work. I am extremely passionate about psychology, but I also really enjoy tutoring English. Literary analysis can be fun, I promise! When I am tutoring a student, I try to relate to him or her on a more friendly and personal level; it is important to me that my students understand I am accessible and there to help, not to intimidate them or make them uncomfortable and confused. I feel that this makes it much easier for a student to approach me with questions or a simple I have no idea whats going on in this math problem. When it comes to standardized testing, I firmly believe that test-taking is a skill in and of itself the SAT, for example, tests ones math and verbal abilities, but it also tests your ability to take the SAT, which is a skill that can be taught and practiced. Outside of academics, I enjoy participating in on-campus theater, folding origami, and baking.

I am a law student, but I took an unusual route to get there. I used to attend medical school but had a change of heart in my career path. Part of this was due to my political science major (double major with biology) in college as well as a number of Spanish and other courses that I took. Tutoring is something, I feel, that has come naturally to me, even back to my high school days. My goal is to help you learn as much as you can and reach your true potential. I am a graduate of the University of Miami School of Communications and received a B.S. in Communications. I doubled majored in Advertising and English Literature and minored in Fine Arts. While studying at UM, I participated in a Study Abroad program and spent a semester in Prague, Czech Republic. The time I spent abroad sparked a desire to travel and study other cultures. This was my first exposure to tutoring students in English. Since graduation, I have spent time working as a substitute teacher and received my TESOL certification to teach English abroad. While I tutor a range of subjects including elementary and middle school math and test preparation, I am passionate about reading, writing, and editing. I strongly believe that the ability to communicate clearly is one of the most important skills any student can learn. I also believe there are many ways to approach a problem, whether in math or writing or study skills, and look forward to finding creative approaches with my students and building upon past sessions to create a solid foundation for future learning. I grew up in Canada and my first degree was from Mt. St. Vincent Women's University in Nova Scotia, Canada. I received a B.A. in political science with a double minor in Women's Studies and Psychology. From there, I moved to the United States, where I started teaching and earned my Master's degree in Education, Special Education from Cambridge College. I went on to complete an Ed.S. online with Old Dominion University in Virginia, with the hopes of doing my doctorate. I stopped my doctorate before completing my dissertation during COVID as the school I was attending closed its doors permanently, and I haven't found an alternative. I may go back someday and finish, but for now, I'm happy with things as they are. I love teaching reading the most, because I am such an avid reader and feel that it is a wonderful skill to have. I have worked in other subjects such as Writing and Social Studies, but I am most passionate about teaching reading and helping students to overcome their struggles with that subject. I have been teaching for all of my adult life and started when I was 17 years old as a tutor for older adults who struggled with literacy skills. This ignited my passion for teaching. My love of teaching has stayed with me for my entire life and though it has been tested over time, I have never thought of doing any other job. My philosophy includes believing that all people are deserving of an education that can help enrich their lives and advance their skills. My life involves enjoying music, writing, reading, animals and nature. Those are the things that have helped me cope with things beyond my control, as well as have provided much-needed alternatives during this new post-pandemic world. I did suffer mild disabilities in speech and Math as a student when I was a kid, so I am particularly sensitive to the needs of students with disabilities.

I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, where I attended Menlo School, one of the top private high schools in California. Given my educational background, I am no stranger to the pressures facing today's students--from schoolwork to extracurriculars to college applications and test prep, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. That's why one of my main goals as a tutor is to ease the stress in students' lives. I'm here to help your workload feel manageable (and hopefully fun!) and to encourage you to do your best work. I take this attitude and my teaching style and adapt it to the needs of each individual student. We'll work together to figure out how YOU learn best, what approaches work well for you, and ultimately, how we can achieve your goals. Whether you're a struggling student who needs a patient and a new way of explaining concepts, or a star student who wants a tutor who will challenge you at new levels, I can help you get there. I am passionate about making every student feel confident and prepared, no matter the academic situation.

I am a graduate of Northwestern University with a BA from the School of Communications, GPA 3.6, with a specialty in Theater and Education. Since then, I have worked as an educator at the Rubin Museum of Art, tutored the SAT, regularly traveled to India where I study Tibetan Language and conduct independent research, and have written, produced, and performed in several music and theatrical productions throughout New York City. The foundation of my tutoring philosophy is personalization and understanding. Different students have different learning styles; some learn best by listening, some by seeing, others must do. To that end, I try to tailor my lessons to fit the needs of each individual student. Ultimately, I believe that the ability to excel in educational pursuits rests largely on mental strategy, organization, and skill, all techniques that are very teachable. While absorbing content is important, the way we look at the question being asked and the way we understand the test itself is just as crucial to success, especially in standardized testing. Therefore, no matter what subject I tutor, it is my goal not just to help the student memorize information and facts, but to lead them towards understanding the underlying goals and structure of the test or assignment itself. To this end, in my lessons I often incorporate cutting-edge mindfulness-awareness and associative memory techniques based both on ancient tradition and cutting-edge brain science to aid my students towards deeper understanding, increased scholastic confidence, and reduced stress. I specialize in SAT, SSAT, and SAT II prep for Math, Verbal, Writing, and Literature, as well as High School History, English, Literature, and Writing, any K-8 subject, and college admissions coaching. In my spare time, I compose music, write and direct theater, and perform around New York City.

I am currently a senior at Harvard College where I study chemistry, and I'll be attending Columbia Medical School next year. I have years of experience tutoring college students in math (mostly calculus) and chemistry including both general and organic chemistry. In addition, I am very familiar with all sections of the SAT and ACT having prepared several high school students for these tests. I believe that every student is capable of boosting his or her baseline score on these tests, so long as he or she works hard to get to know the format of the tests and the most popular types of questions. I tutor because I love seeing students develop a genuine passion for the subjects they once disliked (such as math and science), once they understand the power of these subjects and their applications to the real world.

I am a fourth year student at Harvard Medical School, and will start working as a pediatrician in July of 2016. However, if I had not decided to become a physician, I would have strongly considered becoming a teacher. Teaching is one of the most enjoyable activities I do, and I have taught in some capacity every year for the past ten years. I have taught subjects ranging from English to algebra, from physics to dance, and have taught students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. I have also provided advice on application essays, resumes, and interview strategies for Harvard College students applying to highly competitive scholarships. Each of these experiences has taught me how to communicate concepts in clear and engaging ways. For instance, while tutoring adolescents enrolled in the Boston-based Artists for Humanity program, I would often teach students whom I had never worked with before, and thus became adept at quickly discovering and implementing the strategies that worked best for a particular student (e.g., visual/tactile examples, analogies, and breaking down complex problems into smaller parts). While tutoring a janitorial staff member in preparation for the mathematics portion of her GED high school equivalency exam, I learned how to quickly identify the highest yield topics for a standardized exam and focus our efforts on those. Each of these experiences has been incredibly rewarding, and has inspired me to teach in some capacity throughout my career as a doctor.

Whether you need homework help, exam prep, or want to get ahead, our ISEE tutors are ready to help.

Common challenges include gaps from earlier material, difficulty with specific concepts, and trouble applying learning to new problems. These issues can snowball quickly in ISEE.

A tutor identifies where you're stuck, fills in gaps, and provides targeted practice. The 1-on-1 format means you get help exactly where you need it.

Tutors work with your student's actual coursework—homework assignments, class notes, and upcoming tests. This keeps tutoring directly relevant to what's happening in the classroom.

When you share information about your student's school and curriculum, we can match you with a tutor who has relevant experience.

All tutors complete background checks, credential verification, and teaching evaluation. Many of our ISEE tutors hold advanced degrees or have years of teaching experience.

Many students see improved grades within a few weeks, along with better understanding of ISEE concepts and more confidence tackling challenging material.

Tutors track progress and adjust their approach to ensure continued improvement.

Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. More frequent sessions help if your student is significantly behind or has an important exam coming up.

Your tutor can recommend a schedule based on your student's specific situation and goals.

Tutoring is purchased in packages of hours, with rates varying by tutor experience. Varsity Tutors offers several options to fit different budgets and needs.
