The hardest part of writing isn't grammar — it's figuring out what you actually want to say and organizing it so a reader follows your thinking. Emerson tackles that problem head-on, teaching students to outline arguments, build transitions between ideas, and revise with purpose. His range covers timed essays, research papers, and creative pieces, shaped by a University of Chicago education where clear, rigorous writing is non-negotiable.

Having written everything from political science research papers to artist statements for gallery exhibitions, Emily knows that the voice and structure a piece needs depends entirely on its purpose. She teaches students to identify their audience first, then build drafts with that reader in mind — sharpening claims, tightening transitions, and cutting what doesn't serve the argument. Rated 5.0 by students.
Most writing struggles aren't really about grammar — they're about not knowing what to say next or how to organize an argument. Anushree teaches students to outline their thinking before drafting, then revise with specific goals like tightening thesis statements or strengthening evidence. Her dual-major coursework at UF required constant writing across very different disciplines, so she's comfortable adapting to any assignment type.
Jenna breaks the writing process into manageable stages — brainstorming, outlining, drafting, and revising — so students stop staring at blank pages and start producing work they're proud of. Her coursework in both science and Spanish at the University of Alabama means she's comfortable coaching writing across genres, from lab reports to personal narratives.
Every writing assignment is secretly an exercise in thinking clearly — organizing ideas, choosing precise language, and anticipating what a reader needs to follow your argument. Peyton approaches writing instruction through structure first, teaching students how to build a thesis that does real work and support it with paragraphs that each serve a distinct purpose. Her background in marketing and communications sharpened her instinct for writing that's both persuasive and concise.
Between her thesis, conference presentations, and freelance articles for publications like The New Inquiry, Hannah treats writing as a craft she practices daily — not just a subject she teaches. She breaks the writing process into concrete steps: brainstorming a real argument, building paragraph-level logic, and cutting the filler that weakens a draft. Students walk away with a repeatable method, not just a finished assignment.
I am a sophomore at Johns Hopkins University studying Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I tutor many STEM subjects, SAT/ACT prep, and AP/IB classes! In the years past, I've mentored two robotics teams and I have experience tutoring at my school and in my neighborhood. I deeply believe that an intuitive understanding of educational content is crucial to success, and I implement this philosophy by teaching problem-solving techniques and strategies in addition to the material. In my free time, I love to read, paint, crochet, and watch TV shows. :)
I am teaching the concepts does not work for you, let me know and I will try my very best to teach students in the way they feel comfortable. Also, I am a student myself, so I know and understand the struggles of being a student. Do not worry though! I have tutored countless students ranging from grades 1-12. I have tutored middle school students for the past three years and recently began tutoring a few high school students for the SAT exam. I have received multiple mathematics awards throughout my high school years, so I am confident that I will be able to teach your student the tips and tricks around different types of math problems. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me!
I am a student at the University of North Florida, and I will be graduating with both an accounting and finance degree in December. I have always had a passion for teaching and have tutored in subjects ranging from Calculus to SAT prep. However, as a UNF tutor and SI, I primarily assisted students with accounting classes. From high school accounting to upper level college courses, I am extremely comfortable with the accounting taught in school and would love to assist any with it.
I am a student at University of North Florida. I am working on a Bachelor's of Science with a major in Biology and a focus in molecular and cellular biology. My tutoring experience includes working at Tarpon Springs Public Library as a computer tutor where I had the opportunity to work with many age groups and mostly tutored computer skills, with the a few occasional clients wanting help with other classes they were taking. Additionally I have experience tutoring high school students with AP Chemistry. For fun I like playing video games and learning to play musical instruments.
I am hoping to put forth my knowledge and academic expertise in the variety of areas I am comfortable to do so, but with particular focus on one area that remains a crucial point upon which our education system rest: standardized testing. I am a recent veteran of the rather arduous journey most students take through myriad tests, upon which their success and failure is determined. I have intimate experience and knowledge with the AP, IB, SAT, and GRE tests, and have spent time tutoring in the area of the SAT, as well as staying abreast of changes in testing protocol and procedure for those tests which I listed above, prior to my time here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Writing improves through targeted, individualized feedback—something that's challenging in a classroom setting where teachers manage 18+ students per class. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who review your essays, identify specific strengths and weaknesses in your thesis development, organization, and argumentation, and guide you through revision strategies tailored to your writing style. This focused attention helps you internalize writing principles and develop a stronger voice across all your assignments.
Revising focuses on big-picture issues like thesis clarity, argument structure, and logical flow, while editing addresses grammar, punctuation, and word choice. Many student writers struggle to separate these stages, which leads to unfocused rewrites. Tutors help you develop a systematic writing process—brainstorming, drafting, revising for content, then editing for mechanics—so you can tackle each stage effectively and produce polished, compelling essays.
A strong thesis is specific, debatable, and supported by evidence—but many writers struggle to move beyond vague topic sentences. Tutors work with you to craft clear thesis statements and teach you how to select relevant evidence, organize your arguments logically, and address counterarguments. Through guided practice with your own writing, you'll learn to build essays that are persuasive and well-reasoned.
Yes—citation formatting is a common sticking point for writers at all levels. Tutors can clarify the differences between MLA, APA, and other citation styles, help you format your works cited or reference pages correctly, and teach you how to integrate quotations and paraphrases smoothly into your writing. Once you understand the logic behind citation systems, they become much less intimidating.
Literary analysis requires you to move beyond plot summary to examine how authors use literary devices—symbolism, imagery, tone, point of view—to create meaning. Tutors help you develop close reading skills, teach you how to select relevant textual evidence, and guide you in building arguments about a text's themes and techniques. With practice, you'll write analyses that demonstrate genuine insight into literature.
Grammar is the foundation—correct mechanics make your writing clear and credible. Voice is how you use language uniquely: your sentence variety, word choice, tone, and perspective. Both matter. Tutors help you master grammar fundamentals so they become automatic, then work with you to develop a distinctive, authentic voice appropriate to your audience and purpose. Strong writing combines technical skill with personality.
Writer's block often stems from perfectionism, unclear thinking about your topic, or not knowing where to begin. Tutors use strategies like freewriting, brainstorming, outlining, and asking clarifying questions to help you generate ideas and organize your thoughts before you draft. Once you have a clear plan, the writing process becomes less intimidating, and you can focus on expressing your ideas rather than staring at a blank page.
Bring any writing assignments you're working on—essays, prompts, rubrics, or examples of feedback you've received. If you don't have a specific assignment yet, bring writing samples that show your current level and discuss your goals, whether that's improving essay structure, preparing for standardized writing tests, or developing stronger analytical skills. This helps tutors understand your needs and tailor their approach from day one.
