How can a tutor help you with summer tutoring?

Without the ongoing challenge of the schoolroom, where there's an opportunity to learn and practice important skills, kids tend to fall behind over the summer months. It's a phenomenon known as the "summer slide." If you're concerned about your child "sliding," the educational directors at Varsity Tutors could help you connect with an independent tutor in Nassau County who can keep your child on track, and prevent summer learning loss.

It's estimated that young people can lose up to two months' worth of math skills over one summer. Our educational directors can connect you with an experienced tutor in Nassau County, NY, who will focus only on the subjects that your child struggles to retain during the summer months. Your tutor will have direct experience with the strategies used to help kids retain the instruction they've already received while giving them a head-start on the upcoming school year at the same time.

Summer Tutoring review by Alison in Nassau County, NY
The student and I edited his conclusion paragraph to his essay and then worked on editing sentences that I wrote. We reviewed there/they're/their and you/you're. We also went over to/too/two and buy/by/bye, which he did very well with. For math, we reviewed A/S/M/D negative integers and then did more percentage story problems, which he did well with. His homework is to type his essay and read another chapter in his book. No concerns.

Summer Tutoring review by William in Nassau County, NY
The student and I reviewed what we had done the previous day: set up the app on his phone, discussed a routine for him to stay abreast of upcoming tests and projects, and outlined how he should prioritize. Next, for the remainder of our hour together, we went over the information that will be on his grammar test for Language Arts. He is learning about 'verbal phrases' - participles, gerunds, infinitives, etc. - and these can be very difficult. We employed a combination of visual memorization and engagement through activity that helped him grasp the concepts. And lastly, we talked about his other classes - how they are going and what we need to be prepared for in the week to come.

Summer Tutoring review by Cindy in Nassau County, NY
Today was my last session with this student. We started by going through his classes on his computer and looking for missing assignments. We then went through his loose papers to find old assignments to turn in (found one from biology) and new assignments to complete (one from Earth and Space). After that, we played lateral thinking games. In this case, I presented him with a mystery and he asked yes or no questions to find the answer to the mystery. While he tried to solve the mystery, we also worked on thinking of good questions and articulating the questions in order to get the answer he needed. Asking questions is a way to take ownership of materials and learning, and it is a skill I hope the student will continue to develop. He is a great logical thinker and got much better at articulating questions throughout our session. He was excited to share the game with others. It was a pleasure to meet him and work with him. I know he will be successful in school and in life.

Summer Tutoring review by Marisa in Nassau County, NY
Today, we had tackled the student's Economics project. We read the assignment and picked a starting point to begin. We made a chart organizing what was needed and filled it as we went along. We were able to get the project completed with some minor parts to fix. After concluding our session, we put together a to do sheet for her to complete on her own time before the due date. It has been and continues to be a pleasure working with her and assisting her with organizing!
