Hey! My name is Rohan, and I'm very excited to be a Varsity Tutor. I've been tutoring since I was fourteen years old, and being an older brother, I've also had countless experience tutoring my younger sister. My name is Amanda Poythress, and I've been working in the Education field for three years, now. I graduated from UCF in Orlando, Florida in December of 2013 and I've been working in schools ever since. I almost accidentally fell into education--I always thought I would use my English Lit degree to do something like editing for a publishing company (which I have done!) or writing my own novels (which I am currently working on!). I ended up substitute teaching in Florida for a few months and I found out that I was pretty good at it! There's a satisfaction that comes out of working with students, either in a large classroom setting or personally one-on-one and watching them learn new concepts or master old ones that is so satisfying.Since moving to Chicago in 2014, I've worked exclusively with three South Side Elementary schools. I have experience working with kids from Pre-K all the way up to 12th grade, but during my long-term positions, I've mainly taught Middle School division age kids (6th-8th). While I've worked in all subject fields (and a lot of Math!), my greatest passion is English and Literature. I love reading, it's probably what I spend the most time doing. I also love writing; be it fictional composition, analytical non-fiction based on books or academic essays, or personal non-fiction essays, I love all of it. I also find myself driven to help those struggling with composition or reading find if not a love, then an appreciation for the subject that can help them later on in life.My degree is in English Literature, and I've taken countless classes in genre and strategy-specific survey. I can analyze like the best of them, and it's my goal to help students do it too. In high school I took ten AP or Dual Enrollment classes between three years, so I understand the structure of the tests as well as how hard it is to juggle college course load on top of high school course load.My approach to teaching is to engage, engage, engage! I don't want to just lecture to a glassy-eyed student for an hour. That's a waste of their time as well as mine. And I understand that as a student getting tutoring, you're going above and beyond your classmates when it comes to time spent engaging with Education. That's a hard thing to concentrate on! I want to make it fun and challenging, but not hard and boring. I want you to learn, to further yourself, to become the student YOU want to be. My goal isn't to bog you down with extra work, it's to lift you up to new heights of understanding.I hope I have the opportunity to serve you, the students, and make a positive impact on this city that I've grown to love.

I received an undergraduate education at the University of California Los Angeles from 2008 - 2012, where I earned a degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. Here I earned a prestigious University Research Program Scholarship with the Oppenheimer Foundation for one year. I also performed research for the Howard Hughes Foundation one year later. My collective experiences and insatiable desire for success always lead me to find students who want the same thing.

I am a graduate of Vanderbilt University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and minor in Art. I am currently a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago working towards a Master in Medical Physiology. Since graduation, I have worked remotely for my lab that studies child development and applying to medical school. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about psychology and biology. My previous work experiences have included working as a teacher assistant at a preschool, a residential mentor at a high school academic summer program, and volunteering teaching science lessons in elementary and middle school classrooms.

Following college, I completed my medical degree at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and completed pediatrics residency training at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. I tutored large groups while in medical school in pathology, biochemistry, histology, microbiology, and pharmacology. I have also spent time in small groups and one on one tutoring sessions for a variety of subjects in science. I am available to tutor biology, chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and anatomy and physiology. My favorite subjects to tutor are biology and microbiology because of the understanding required at a cellular level. I believe all students have the ability to excel and reach their individual goals in any subject and my philosophy lies in creating a context for understanding for the student. Science is fun and changing the framework in how a student looks at science can make all the difference.

My experience spans community college students to undergraduate and graduate learners. I currently have about 15 Doctoral/Research students for whom I serve both as Mentor and Dissertation Chairperson.I enjoy the opportunity to be a mentor. In fact, I relish the experience and have realized that I learn as much from my students as they do from me.I am currently on a sabbatical from my university where I serve as a law professor. I am in the middle of two books on law/psychology and a science fiction novel about artificial intelligence.In my spare time, I research and write. With a penchant for classical music and horse riding, I find it useful to temper my scholarly exuberance with some distractions such as driving fast and far to clear my mind. I also operate, with some very able and committed colleagues, a Not-for-profit organization dedicated to assisting people get into gainful employment.

I am a current law student at Washington University in St. Louis and also graduated summa cum laude from their undergraduate program in 2014. I have dual citizenship with the US and Chile, and my hispanic roots have always been very important to me. I grew up speaking Spanish but have also dedicated a significant portion of my academic studies to Spanish language and literature as well. I am passionate about helping others reach their goals and take pride in helping make the Spanish language and various Spanish-speaking cultures more accessible to anyone willing to learn.
