Session Summaries by Summer Tutors

Summer Tutoring review by Martine in Chino, CA
For math, I covered lesson 3 with the student on "Metric Units of Mass" circling the more reasonable estimate for each mass, completing the table by writing a reasonable unit of mass/ grams/ kilograms for each object, completing the problem solving/ vocabulary check/ test practice. She also had to complete a quiz online on "compare & convert customary units" which she performed well on. For Science, we read the lesson 1 on "What's an Ecosystem" covering ecosystem, environment, population & community; we answered the related questions for the chapter on each section. I went over differences in climates and living vs. non-living things.

Summer Tutoring review by Julia in Chino, CA
This was the student's best session so far! She was very focused and is getting better about staying calm when she doesn't get something right away and working through it. We worked on simplifying fractions as a review from last session. She needed a few reminders and then was able to correctly reduce several fractions. We went over her math homework and spent time working on finding the perimeter and area of complex figures. We will continue working on this next session.

We studied for her English test by playing a couple of games, wrote sentences using prepositional phrases and good/ will after reviewing what each is and how they're used. She was pretty confident in it and did a good job.

Summer Tutoring review by Emma in Chino, CA
During this session we reviewed options for the student's upcoming Physics exam. This meant that we started off with the Doppler effect. We looked into why it happens and ways to explain it and then how to use the equations that describe it. We then moved on to just resolved lights and the Rayleigh criterion. Then we looked at the thin lens equation and what the focal length of a lens is. We ended discussing multiple slit diffraction and the various parts of the equation used to describe it in the data booklet.

Summer Tutoring review by Jonathan in Chino, CA
We went over the chapter 1 test I had assigned at the end of last lesson. The student was not as clear on some of the concepts as it had seemed during our previous sessions, so we went over the topics he was not 100% on. Admittedly, there are a lot of definitions and we are moving quickly, so I should have expected today to be mostly review. In addition to the questions on the practice test, we did additional practice questions concerning angle measurements and the angle addition postulate until the answers became immediately obvious to him, as he seemed to be overthinking the problems at first. I asked him to take another look at all the definitions for the chapter 1 vocabulary before we move on to chapter 2 and formal proofs next time.

Summer Tutoring review by Thomas in Chino, CA
I reviewed our strategy for studying, preparing for tests, and how we needed to stay ahead of the curve in accounting and economics. We went over some basic concepts in accounting, like accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash balances, assets, liabilities, current ratio, etc., and the student did seem to know most of these well. The key is being able to identify which part of the balance sheet is affected when a company buys something, needs to pay for an item, or takes in cash. He is starting to get these problems, so we are reviewing. He just got a 95 on a quiz, so his understanding is good. He is right in the middle of some key economic introduction material, and we reviewed financial statements, Law of Demand, standardization, consumption, scarcity, etc. He did well. In history, they are beginning to talk about the early settlers in America, so we will be reviewing his book so he can do well on his first quizzes, which will be coming soon. He is aware of the tough semester ahead, and doing well in being accountable to me about his work being complete. he is doing a lot of reading and self study so far in astronomy...no tests yet. Another good session.
