I have worked with many middle school and high school students to improve their writing so that they could succeed in high school and college. I have also counseled students on college admissions and edited hundreds of college application essays at the undergraduate and graduate levels (including for medical school). I have written books, professional articles, and podcast episodes over many years. For three years, my college admissions podcast (USACollegeChat) reached thousands of prospective college students and their parents. My specialties are improving grammar, punctuation, and capitalization; writing concise and engaging sentences; building perfect paragraphs; and putting together an essay that is meaningful and persuasive. I love to help others improve their writing and believe that there is no way to do that other than over-the-shoulder working together. Many of my students would tell you that they have never had a teacher/counselor who cared about them more than I did. I am most proud of that!

I am originally from Evanston, IL. I just recently graduated from Brown University with a degree in Music Theory/History/Composition and am about to embark on a master's program at NYU in musical theatre writing. Aside from playing trombone or composing I can often be found baking something fresh or playing with dogs outside.Throughout high school I got a lot of help from my dad with my homework and realized the value of working with others on assignments. He taught me many of my tutoring philosophies that I have today, including the fact that teaching one of the best ways to solidify knowledge. I also want to help students find passion in subjects that they might not want to admit are interesting. I also want to highlight each students strengths to guide the way through where they are less confident. College application essays and writing papers may be stressful but I want to help students find the best methods to make the process engaging, enlightening, and, dare I say, fun.

I believe teaching and learning are a combination of factors that come together to help people better themselves on a daily basis. Hard work, creativity, helping others, goal setting, and connecting to one's own personal struggles and triumphs are integral to giving the teacher and student a chance to excel and achieve the small wins necessary to build up to sustained success.

In all of my capacities as an educator and tutorwhich range from lecturing at the University of Michigan to instructing summer courses on college-application essays to tutoring elementary students as a Peace Corps volunteer in ThailandI continue to see the power of critical thinking when fueled by curiosity. I believe that this coupling of curiosityor "inquiry," as some of us call itand textual analysis can change the world. Being able to think critically about who we are, what we believe, and why we believe it given our personal contexts allows us to enter into new, exciting spaces where we can really, tangibly, impact our culture. Guiding this process is my passion.I will be starting my PhD (Media Studies) this Fall at Northwestern University and look to continue tutoring throughout my studies. Although that will place me in Chicago, I'm a Michigander at heart, having lived most of my life in mid-Michigan. I received my B.A. (Journalism) at Michigan State University; I taught college composition at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University; and nothing makes me happier than strapping up my kayaks and exploring the state's rivers and lakes. I am confident in my ability to help students with any situation where they are trying to convey a purpose to an audiencebe it in the form of ACT/GRE prompts, college-application essays, textual analyses, newspaper articles, or just basic essay editing.I also have two years of experience teaching ESL from my time in Thailand. :)

I graduated from Central High School in Keller, TX in May 2011 and received a B.S in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Arkansas in May 2016. I am currently working in health care with the hopes of becoming a physician assistant. While I tutor for a broad range of subjects, I have a love for nutrition, science, and medicine.
