The student and I worked on his supplemental admission essays for two universities. We fine-tuned a few of them and overhauled a few others to make sure he better answered the questions in the manner the questions asked. Our focus was on cutting out repetitious or irrelevant information. His essays are in good shape, and we will finalize them tomorrow.

The student and I reviewed his two essays and the necessary changes, the revision process, and what colleges are looking for the most. He's got some great points about what triggered medical interests and now it's just a matter of honing them and refining the papers for colleges! We'll continue to do revisions via emails and online sessions in between revisions.

Today, we worked on the second example and conclusion of the common app personal essay, which is looking fantastic. I think it accomplishes a lot in 650 words, and shows a lot of depth. We discussed some shorter prompts for his college essay and brainstormed responses for those, and set some upcoming sessions for work on other essays. It was a solid and productive session.

The student and I worked on hammering out a concrete outline for his 10-page paper. He had a wealth of information about the subject, but no clear idea on how to organize and present it around a common theme. We talked for a while so I could get a handle on what he wanted to say on the topic, and from there we agreed on a general thesis that he would base his paper on. From there, we worked on breaking down the behemoth 10-page limit into manageable chunks, and we found three distinct categories of information from his sources that we used for each third of his paper. With roughly 3 pages per section, all of the raw info he had amassed became easy to partition and weave into the thesis we formed. He told me he was nervous and unprepared for such a long essay before our session, but now with a concrete structure in place and a clear understanding of why certain information fits into certain sections of the paper, he's much more confident going forward with the essay. It was productive and fun for both of us.

We finalized one of the personal statement essays arguing why the student wants to enter the field of radiation oncology.

The student and I went over his sea turtle essay, which he finished over the course of the week. We edited it, and then worked on revising portions of it to make it stronger and talk more about his connection to the event he describes. Then, we identified the main ideas he wants to convey in this essay, why the event was important to him, and we worked on ways of phrasing those things so they don't seem cliche. I left him with the task of finishing up revision 1 for next time.
