A psychology degree gives Katelyn a sharper-than-average read on what's actually going on when a middle schooler shuts down mid-homework — whether it's a confidence issue, an unnoticed gap in pre-algebra foundations, or just the overwhelm of juggling six subjects for the first time. Her math background is especially deep, covering everything from elementary through calculus, so she can trace a seventh grader's fraction struggles all the way back to the root and rebuild from there. She also has experience working with gifted and special needs students, which means she adjusts her approach based on how each kid actually learns.

I'm a born and raised Austinite and recently earned my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University in May 2015. I mostly tutor high school/college math and science courses, as well as SAT/ACT and MCAT prep. My favorite classes to help students with are biology, physics, biochemistry and statistics! I took 14 AP classes in high school, and retook many of the math and sciences class in college. I think this helps with tutoring because I learned the material multiple times and from many great teachers, so if a student doesn't understand a concept at first, I can hopefully explain it in another way that I've learned.

BS The University of Texas at Austin

I am currently a senior at the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from high school in 2022 earning a 4.0 GPA along with a 1530 SAT (800 Math, 730 Reading) and a 34 ACT (30 Math, 34 Science, 35 English, 35 Reading). Achieving these results taught me that strong outcomes come from effective habits, not shortcuts, and I spent years refining study techniques such as active recall and spaced repetition that helped me learn more efficiently and with less stress. These strategies continue to support me in my college coursework and shape how I approach teaching. I began tutoring during high school and quickly discovered how meaningful it was to help other students gain confidence in subjects they once found intimidating. I have experience working one-on-one with middle school and high school students in both volunteer and informal tutoring settings, focusing on math, English, and standardized test preparation. My tutoring style centers on patience and clarity, breaking down complex ideas into manageable steps and reinforcing understanding through practice. I place a strong emphasis on helping students understand how to study effectively, rather than relying on memorization alone. I am comfortable tutoring math and English at all levels, as well as SAT Math and Reading and ACT Math and Reading. Having recently navigated rigorous coursework and competitive testing myself, I understand the pressures students face and strive to create a supportive, encouraging learning environment. My goal is not only to help students improve their grades or scores, but also to equip them with study skills and confidence that will benefit them well beyond our tutoring sessions.

I'm a biomedical engineering student and undergraduate researcher at Texas A&M University working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. For as long as I can remember, I've always had a passion for learning. In high school, I challenged myself by taking as many AP exams as possible. Doing so not only shaped my love of education but also challenged me to become a self-taught learner. Using what I learned from AP exam preparation allowed me to become a National Merit Finalist, two-time National AP Scholar, and valedictorian of my graduating class of over 600 students. While my favorite subjects to tutor are high school-level and engineering calculus, I am happy to tutor in a range of subjects, including all-around ACT preparation, high school and college math, chemistry, physics, and world history. By tutoring, I hope to share my passion for learning while also providing students with the tools they need to succeed.

I also worked with Communities in Schools at a Title I elementary school on writing, grammar, reading, and comprehension. Writing and English are my favorite subjects to tutor because I love to see the satisfaction on a student's face when they can finally take all of the puzzle pieces of ideas floating around in their head and put them in a tangible form. Getting those thoughts on paper proves to a student that their words are worth being read and heard. My teaching philosophy is taking a collaborative, non-directive, and non-evaluative approach in helping my students cultivate writing skills and confidence that they will have for future writing endeavors. I am a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington! I earned a B.S. in Physics with honors as well as a minor in mathematics. I worked in a theoretical physics lab modeling and simulating new materials to be used in solar energy applications, as well as tutored physics independently. While in college, I was part of the UTeach program, a nationwide initiative to train science and math students to teach. In this program I developed a passion for working with students both in and out of the classroom. I strongly believe in inquiry-based instruction, which consists of leading students to develop solutions on their own while analyzing their thought process. This allows the student and instructor to discover the student's misconceptions and for the student to correct them. I have found that this method is much more effective than traditional styles because when the student verbalizes their thought process and corrects their own misconceptions, it is something they will remember when it comes time for an exam.

I'm a graduate of Shiraz University, and I grew up in Shiraz, Iran. I came to the USA in 2009 and I am trying to transfer to dental school. While I tutor a variety of subjects, math is easily my favorite. I love basic math, algebra, calculus and everything in between, and it shows in my work. My mom was a teacher, and she helped me to pick up my first problem solving position in high school. Since then, I've worked with students from ninth grade to adults returning to the classroom, students struggling to pass to students wanting to attend (or get into!) a special high school or college. I am a math and science tutor at Austin Community College as well as a DAT (Dental Admission Test) instructor for Kaplan Test Preparation. Most students come to me for math, but I've also worked with standardized test preparation, chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, and time management. Math and science classes are really just elaborate puzzles to solve, and most of my students learn to enjoy the process of figuring out what to do once I help them develop the confidence and skill set they need to be successful. Not everyone loves science courses, especially math but I do, and it's contagious. In my free time, I like to explore Austin with my friends: from coffee shops to parks to museums. This is a really fun city! I also enjoy listening to all kinds of music, swimming and reading a good book.

I am a dual degree graduate with a bachelor's in both zoology (from liberal arts school - Ohio Wesleyan University) and biomedical engineering (from Washington University in St. Louis). I am working towards a Masters in Electrical Engineering and expect to receive it this August 2021. This dual degree program has the purpose of producing well rounded students - rather than students jumping straight into engineering, dual degree students spend 3 years at a liberal arts school learning how to write, analyze and express their artistic side. I believe it worked! I have been a TA for multiple professors in math courses throughout college; in addition, fellow classmates often came to me for help with homework assignments. On top of that, I have experience Tutoring friends and siblings in subjects such as algebra geometry, and all levels of calculus. One of my favorite subject to teach is Algebra, as there is a lot to say about its simplicity but how powerful it can be in application, I find that beautiful. I am a firm believer of truly understanding the essence of mathematics - it is more than just step by step answers and solutions. If one has a good mentor than they should be able to see how fun math can be! In my spare time, I love playing League of Legends, playing football, and working out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Middle school is a transition year where students juggle multiple teachers, increased homework expectations, and growing social pressures. Many Austin students struggle with time management, organization across different classes, and adapting to a faster-paced curriculum than elementary school. Personalized tutoring helps students build these executive function skills while staying on top of core subjects like math, English, science, and social studies.

In Austin's middle schools with an average student-teacher ratio of 14.9:1, teachers often can't address each student's individual learning pace or gaps. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction focuses entirely on your student's strengths and weaknesses, allowing tutors to adjust explanations, slow down on difficult concepts, and accelerate through material your student already understands. This targeted approach typically leads to faster progress than waiting for classroom-based support.

The first session is an assessment and relationship-building meeting. A tutor will ask about your student's current performance, learning style, specific challenges, and goals—whether that's improving a grade, preparing for state assessments, or building confidence. They'll also explain their teaching approach and work with your student on an initial concept to establish rapport and identify the best starting point for ongoing sessions.

Yes. Tutors working with students in Austin are familiar with the curriculum standards used across Austin's 24 school districts, including Austin ISD's scope and sequence for middle grades. Whether your student needs help with TEKS-aligned content, state assessment preparation, or specific unit concepts, tutors can connect tutoring directly to what's being taught in the classroom.

Math and English language arts are the most requested subjects, as these are foundational for all future learning and often where gaps become visible in middle school. Science and social studies support is also common, especially as students transition to more abstract thinking and independent research. Tutors also help with study skills, test preparation, and subject-specific writing across all disciplines.

Tutors typically provide progress updates after each session, noting concepts covered, areas of strength, and next steps. You'll see measurable improvements through better homework completion, improved quiz and test scores, increased confidence, and stronger understanding of key concepts. Many parents notice changes within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on your student's starting point and frequency of sessions.

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who match your student's needs, schedule, and learning style. You'll share information about your student's grade level, subjects, current challenges, and availability. Then you'll be matched with an experienced tutor, and you can meet for an initial session to see if it's a good fit before committing to ongoing tutoring.

This depends on your student's needs and goals. Students working to improve a specific grade or prepare for state assessments often benefit from weekly or twice-weekly sessions, while those building foundational skills or maintaining strong performance may do well with bi-weekly sessions. A tutor can recommend a schedule during your first conversation and adjust it as your student progresses.
