3rd Grade Science Tutor • +15 Subjects

I am currently a senior at Seton Hill University and am pursuing a degree in early elementary (preK-4) and special education (preK-8). During my studies at Seton Hill, I have had many tutoring and teaching experiences. I recently finished a tutoring practicum, in which I helped third-fifth grade students in whatever subject they were working on. Along with the tutoring practicum, I also completed many teaching practicums in various school districts. In the past few years, I have had the opportunity to assist with an exceptional needs dance class in which I helped the girls master their dance moves as well as express themselves through movement. I am currently completing the student teaching portion of my major and plan to graduate this upcoming May. Aside from teaching experience, I had worked for two summers at the YMCA day camp where I learned many teaching and management strategies for collaborating with students. I tutor any elementary level subject as well as any special education. However, my favorite subjects to tutor are math and English! When I'm not studying or learning how to be a teacher, I like anything to do with sports. My favorite sport teams are the Steelers, Pirates, and the USA men's soccer team, but any type of sport will do. I love the competitive nature and good fun that sports bring. My favorite sport to play is volleyball. Along with watching and playing sports, I enjoy working out and going on a nice run through the park, reading a good book, strumming guitar, or anything that has to do with hanging out with my family and friends! Hope to meet you soon!

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +20 Subjects

I graduated from high school at Fordham Preparatory School in 2010 and am currently taking a semester off before my final year at the Macaulay Honors College at CUNY Brooklyn. I am working towards two bachelors degrees: a BFA in Creative Writing and a BA in Psychology. My first tutoring experience was in my senior year of high school during which I tutored juniors who wanted extra help preparing for the AP Language and Composition exam, which I had taken the previous year. In college I have helped students struggling with general essay-writing and specific English courses—mainly writing-intensive courses but in some cases literature classes as well. I have tutored students, including some non-native speakers, who struggled with essay-writing and grammar, syntax, and usage issues. My favorite subject to tutor was definitely AP Language and Composition mostly because of my interest in the subject itself. A lot of students know how to write a good essay but really struggle with this particular AP material because it requires you to take a step back and dissect the specific methods and structures at play in a given passage presented at random. Being able to put one's finger on the precise rhetorical methods that go into a strong piece of writing is really an enlightening experience. As far as my personal tutoring style, I prefer to provide students with the guidance and practice necessary to understand each individual facet of a given subject until they feel completely comfortable with the material on their own. I find it very important to avoid overwhelming students with the big picture of something like an SAT or AP exam and prefer to break down the material into manageable pieces which, once mastered, will allow the student to excel at the subject as a whole.Besides my academic pursuits, I enjoy going to shows for local bands in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and I participate in a bi-monthly poetry reading presented by a group with whom I workshop my personal writing projects. I spend a decent amount of time reading poetry and fiction when left to my own devices, but I also have a weakness for television and may just as likely be found catching up on reality shows.

I am a dedicated and friendly educator, with a Bachelors in Journalism and Masters in Education. I have more than 15 years in education with a focus in math, from a tutor to a teacher to a teacher specialist. While I am generalist certified to tutor all subjects, I am very passionate about math especially, middle school math. I also love journalism and entrepreneurship. I believe, "That the best teachers teach from the heart, not from a book.!"

I have a BA in economics from Pomona College with minors in mathematics and music. After college, I was a non-degree, special student at Harvard University for two years where I retook several economics and mathematics classes through the Research Scholar Initiative to better prepare myself for graduate school. I've since been working on my master's degree in economics at Michigan State University. Throughout college and graduate school, I tutored elementary school children in English, math, and music, a middle school student in algebra, high school students in personal finance, and college students in microeconomics and macroeconomics. I am most passionate when tutoring students in mathematics because, regardless of your field of study, math has a funny way of popping up in whatever you do. As someone who has been the worst and best student in many classes, I understand that low performing students are NOT dumb or lazy and that a stellar tutor can make a big difference. In my free time, I like to sing in my church choir and exercise.

I am an adjunct professor and freelance writer with a PhD in history. I write and teach a lot about women's studies, cultural history, and transnational studies with a particular emphasis on the Modern Middle East and US-Turk relations. As for teaching and outreach: Ive found that making the material pertinent and connecting it to who you are and where you want to be will make it come alive. Hence, in tutoring and teaching I enjoy teasing out the material into a story. That way we have something to entertain us as we build a timeline and craft a memory of the past, of peoples, and of communities.I'm also the author of numerous books, the most recent being Comics as History, Comics as Literature and book chapters, reference entries, book reviews, and journal articles. My busy publication career deals extensively on nationalism, womens rights, women's liberation, Turkish-US relations, transnational feminism, and travel literature. Most recently I completed two smaller pieces: Failing New Women: Anne Shirleys Legacy, The New Woman, and World War I and Importing the Ethnic: Voyeurism on Your Dinner Plate (concerning the permeation of American Chinese food). Both are due out in the ensuing year, and both were absolute fun to write. In teaching and writing I like to focus on how to engage and make the story come to life.I also publish travel literature and some fiction outside of academia and serve as co-chair of the European Association of American Studies Women's Steering Committee. This past summer I crafted travel writing while spelunking in the Iowas Women's Archives and the Oregon State University Archives, as my co-writer and I have been crafting a discursive examination of food safety, activism, and grassroots women's voices. This project Safety For Our Souls has received funding from several libraries. That being said . . . the fuel that makes this endless hard work worthwhile is engaging students and building skills in creative ways that make the mundane really feel less like work and more like an excursion into something entertaining.

I believe that learning should be fun, easy, and individualized. I am good at breaking down complex concepts into simple, bite-sized chunks. I believe there are a lot of ways to learn the same concepts, and I enjoy making each lesson relevant to the person I am teaching. I also like to laugh and have a good time. I am especially experienced in economics, finance, math, and history, but I enjoy all subjects and I hope to help you enjoy them as well! Looking forward to working together :)
