I am currently a Sophomore Mechanical Engineering major at Tufts University. I have a passion for anything math related and enjoy sharing my love for math with everyone else. I make sure that everyone understands the stuff they are learning on their own terms to make sure it is more accessible for future use. I was a Teaching Assistant for a Calculus 2 class last semester. I love baseball, swimming, and rowing. I also used to play chess competitively. I believe the way to truly understand something is to do it until you can explain it to someone else.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Indianapolis and I completed the transition to teaching program from Indiana Wesleyan University to earn my secondary math teaching license. Because of these degrees, I enjoy tutoring math and science the most. I have 6 years of teaching experience in public and private schools, but have also taught children how to swim for over 25 years. I have recently adopted three older children from Bolivia that we homeschool, so daily I am finding playful and efficient ways to teach my own kids. I have also lived in Bolivia for 6 years and speak Spanish conversationally and would enjoy helping you or your child learn Spanish as well. I love helping children have fun and feel successful while they are learning. In my free time I enjoy spending time in nature, with my family, and reading a good book. I graduated with a BS in Applied Mathematics from SUNY Polytechnic Institute (you may not know where or what that is, but that's ok). In addition, I also received an academic minor in Computer Information Science. Ever since I was a young kid, I always enjoyed helping others out wherever I could. Even today, I still get joy when an opportunity arises. The main topics I enjoy teaching is early stage math as well as Minecraft. I believe in working with students to help build their understanding of a topic so that their confidence increases overtime. In addition to academic work, I also enjoy playing Minecraft (Java edition) and participating in sporting events.

Of the many subjects I have helped my students with, subjects involving math or politics have been my favorite, because both challenge me to think creatively and critically. My tutoring philosophy is to help create independent and critical thinkers. My style reflects this style: The ultimate goal in every tutoring session is NOT to get the right answers, but to understand the concepts being taught and to be able to apply that understanding to a variety of situations. Outside of working with students, I enjoy reading and running.

My tutoring career started while I was still attending Western Illinois University in pursuit of my bachelor's degree in physics. I would tutor in the physics tutoring center in the main sciences building. Students would come in without appointments, and we would accept any and all students who needed help. I was there for two years, my junior and senior year before I left after receiving my degree. During my school years, I would also assist in the physics and chemistry demonstration shows that we put on every year. Students from the local middle school and high school would attend, and fellow students and I would perform a variety of educational demonstrations. As you might guess, the subjects I feel most confident in tutoring would be physics and math. However, I don't believe that to be the limit of my scope. I've always had an interest in the other sciences, things like biology and chemistry, and I've had ten years of piano lessons so basic music theory and education are within my range as well. When I'm not tutoring, I like to play video games online with my friends, a few songs on the piano, and even meet up to play the occasional table top game like Dungeons and Dragons. I study chess rigorously, and hope to one day be a chess tutor as well. Picking the right tutor is important, but can be a tad tricky. A tutor is best served as both an educational guide and a friend. Because of the one on one nature, it's important that the tutor is someone you can look up to and trust as well as feel connected with. To me, a tutor's job is not to make the student jump through more and more hoops in the interest of perfection. Rather, they are there to foster curiosity, a willingness to learn from mistakes, and improve a student's level of confidence in a subject matter. A true master is an eternal student.

I began tutoring in high school as president of the Math Honors Society and a member of the science honors society. In college, I continued to teach peers through Cornell Outdoor Education.I believe any student can suceed in the math and sciences regardless of gender or natural ability. Through repition, visulaization, and step by step understanding, any problem can be conquered. My goal is to help each individual over the initial, reaction of "I can't do this" to "I can figure this out." I hope to cultivate confidence and understanding in your child regardless of the topics they struggle with.
