I was born in Shanghai, China and stayed in Shanghai through high school before I attended Carleton College, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a minor in Cross-Cultural Studies. I am a native Chinese Mandarin speaker. During my 4 years at Carleton College, I worked as a teaching assistant with the Chinese Language Department. I tutored students on a one-on-one basis to help them improve their spoken and written Chinese language abilities. My way of teaching is extremely flexible, catering to the student’s need. If you come visit my sessions, you will find very interactive dialogues accompanied by laughter and a relaxing environment, yet very learning conducive. I used various methods and media to assist learning such as tapes, and short videos, etc. What I find the students appreciate the most is the cultural and history background I am able to bring into the tutor sessions to make learning more fun and meaningful. In addition, I also have strong interest and deep knowledge in Mathematics, such as Algebra and Geometry. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, travelling and photography.

I've been a mathematician and tutor for about 15 years. I have also taught mathematics at the college level for the past 7 years. My research touches on the interactions between math and theoretical computer science, as well as number theory (largely the study of prime numbers). I've taught courses ranging from basic arithmetic up through linear algebra and multivariable calculus. The second most exciting thing about mathematics is that moment when something totally opaque and confusing suddenly solidifies into crystal clarity. It's the sort of moment that makes you shout "aha!" or "eureka!". The most exciting thing about mathematics is sharing that experience with someone else.

I am a current high school mathematics teacher at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA. In my time as a teacher I have had experience teaching classes at all levels ranging from pre-algebra to AP Calculus BC. Prior to this, I completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in mathematics education at the University of Maine. While studying as a graduate student, I had the opportunity to manage an undergraduate tutoring center for mathematics and science students, and I also designed and facilitated training workshops for middle and high school math teachers who were preparing to enact the Common Core State Standards. I am passionate about mathematics and computer science, and I love helping students to see the excitement and power of these subjects! Mathematics is the foundation for being able to critically analyze an astoundingly wide range of real problems, and I believe that students can greatly improve their ability to objectively reason about nearly any area of life through the study of math. In my spare time, I love to be active through activities like hiking, tennis, running, ballroom dance, and yoga.

I have been tutoring high school math, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, for more than 20 years.Every student I've tutored has improved their test scores, gained self-confidence, and increased their class participation as a result of my tutoring.By using my proven problem solving techniques, your student will excel in math. Problem solving is the key to mastering math, but it is also one of the hallmarks of a great education. My educational background includes a B.A. in mechanical engineering from Columbia University, an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Columbia University. I set a standard for myself in college to get no less than an A- in any engineering lecture class, and I did so, graduating as salutatorian. I also freelance as an engineer, designing and maintaining databases for small to mid-size companies.I learned the art of problem solving in college and graduate school. It starts with stepping back and asking "what is going on here?" which leads to identifying the main point of the problem. Your student will write "cheat sheets" which outline all the fundamental rules relevant to a particular subject area, such as triangles. Once the main point or points of a problem are identified, the "cheat sheets" are very helpful in completing the problem.I look forward to sharing these problem solving skills to help you succeed in math and beyond.

I am a recent Portland transplant from the East Coast, along with my fiancee and our dog Max. I'm in the process of transitioning into a career in software development, and am currently attending a coding bootcamp downtown. When I'm not wrestling with Ruby and JavaScript, you can find me exploring Portland parks or hanging out reading and playing video games. I think I'm a great tutor because I genuinely love learning, no matter the subject, and I think that kind of passion for learning is contagious

I am a Microbiologist at Washington University that studies the parasite that causes malaria. I have been mentoring, teaching and tutoring students at all levels from my time as an undergraduate at Brown University, through my graduate studies at MIT to my current research position now at Washington University. In college I tutored Biology, Chemistry and Organic Chemistry to fellow undergraduates. In graduate school I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate courses in Immunology and Genetics. The combination of my research experience along with my teaching experience means that I use the things I learned in Math, Chemistry and Biology on a daily basis. My approach to tutoring and teaching is to focus on the concepts that are crucial for the students to understand the material. By concentrating on the important concepts as opposed to memorization, I have found that students in the long run perform much better on their exams. My primary areas of experience are Chemistry through the college level and Biology at just about any level.
