What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe every student has the ability to succeed academically. I provide dynamic and engaging instruction so learning becomes an enjoyable experience.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In our first session, I will identify your student's strengths and weaknesses. Then, we will create specific academic goals and create a customized learning plan to help the student achieve those goals.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I help students become independent learners by teaching each student techniques to approach problem-solving. I also teach students study tips and test-taking strategies so they can achieve success in the classroom.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Each student identifies goals he or she wants to reach. I help students stay motivated by tracking each student's progress towards their goals. Students are encouraged to reach their goals and gain confidence as they grow.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I give students a reading comprehension assessment that helps me to identify the source of the student's difficulties. Then, I provide customized instruction that addresses the student's weaknesses.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Every student learns differently. I customize my instruction to fit each student's learning style. Depending on the student's preferred learning style, I will provide verbal instruction, visual representations of the material, or hands-on exercises.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
My enthusiasm for learning is infectious. I enjoy providing instruction that intrigues the student. I learn about each student, and then relate the topic to the student's interests. For example, if Jordan loves cooking, then we will examine fractions used in baking. If Jamie loves sports, then I will provide reading material related to sports.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I use several different techniques to check for understanding. My favorite approach is to ask students to "teach" me what they learned. This technique is useful because it helps me see the student's thought process.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I offer encouraging and attentive instruction. Students learn that it is okay to make a mistake, and they receive praise when they succeed. I track each student's progress towards reaching the goals we identify. Students become more confident the closer they get to reaching each goal.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I discuss the student's needs with the student and the parent. Then, I conduct specific assessments to pinpoint exactly what the student needs to learn.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I offer accommodations for students based on their needs. I incorporate brain breaks and hands-on activities that keep students active and engaged. Additionally, I teach learning strategies that help students struggling with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD or other learning disabilities.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
In math sessions, I use counters, number blocks, flash cards, multiplication charts, play money, and math games. In reading sessions, I use reading passages, phonics cards, vocabulary games, and various reading games.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
When a student has difficulty learning a concept, I break the concept down into smaller ideas that are easier to understand. As we explore each idea, the student gains a better understanding of the concept.
