We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

SSAT- Upper Level Tutoring FAQ

The Secondary School Admission Test, or SSAT, is used in private school admissions. The Upper Level version is designed for students who are currently in grades 8-11. The SSAT is offered throughout the year on specific dates in specific places.

There are three scored portions of the SSAT Upper Level test: Quantitative, Reading Comprehension, and Verbal. There is an unscored written component of the exam, which is given to admissions officials along with the scored portions. While it is not scored, it is important for students to do well on this section, as it gives each school an idea of how well your child is able to write. The experimental section is also not scored. It is comprised of new questions and determines their validity for future exams. Varsity Tutors can help you find an expert tutor who can lead your child through prepping for the SSAT Upper Level exam.

Tutoring with this student today went very well. We solely did math as he was initially struggled with it and I wanted to emphasize it more. He is definitely improving. I want to take note of critical reading as well.

Today we went over the practice test that I assigned for homework last session. The student did very well on the math section, but poorly on the reading section. Her essay was also significantly below par. I walked her through some basic essay formats she can use and went over some important points for content. I think she does have the structure down, but just to be safe I want to spend next session on the essay portion of the test.

We first finished the previous math questions that she couldn't answer. Once she took notes on the mathematical concepts she learned, we began to review the essay. I coached her on how to approach it. She was scared of making the wrong choice in answering the essay, but I assured her that there was no wrong answer. Rather the essay was judged by how well you can back up your opinion. I had her try an essay prompt and gave her some tips on improving her writing while working less. We finished the session with some vocabulary/ synonym work.

I worked with the student first on some reading/ writing areas and went over persuasive essays. We got some good work done-his vocab needs some brushing up and formulating essays needs some work but he did well overall. He and I did math, analogies and synonyms-he did well but needs some practice especially in those last two areas.

The student's creative writing piece was detailed and flowed nicely, but I challenged him to develop more of a plot. His reading section is his strongest, which he showed again in his homework. The math work is coming-- his mental math is slow which is holding him back slightly. I will look to bring more fraction/ decimal/ percent conversion work for him so that he can tackle questions at a more elevated pace.

We started out with vocabulary. The student had made many vocal cards and was concerned about learning them all. I assured her that many students find the task daunting, and the SSAT test is designed to be difficult. I also showed her a chart with median scores by grade. We found mnemonics for some of her words. She has a strategy for the cards and how she will approach them including finding additional mnemonics. Most of the session was spent on math, reviewing homework. I am going to send her some additional percentage word problems. Homework: finish SSAT test in review book including essay.
