We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Tutoring review by Robert in Park Ridge, IL
We covered radicals, exponents, and their properties. There was a lot of confusion on how to simplify radicals, so I taught him how to convert a radical to an exponent.

In our session yesterday, the student and I did our final studies together for his upcoming history exam. We used flashcards to practice memorization of key dates, individuals, and dynasties, and we also reviewed important terms and themes in regard to potential essay topics. We finished by doing a mock-oral presentation, wherein he told me the key points he planned to hit for each potential essay.

For our math review today, I've had the student work on several different kinds of problems in the test prep book and we reviewed the concepts for the problems that he has trouble with. For ratio type problems, I showed him the various different ways in which you can represent a ratio, either as a fraction or using colons. I've also reviewed with him the tendency for the SATs to hide triangles and the concept that problems that require him to solve for the length of a diagonal require the Pythagorean theorem, whether in the 2D plane or the 3D figure. He also struggled a little with interpreting consecutive summation problems, where the problem asks the student to add consecutive integers from number A to variable x. I broke down the problem step by step and will be assigning him practice problems that will retest and reinforce these concepts. He was usually very good at selecting his own numbers to simplify many of the problems I've had him complete. For the writing practice, we worked on improving sentences again. He is becoming very proficient at eliminating choices containing "being" as well as those written in the passive voice. Overall, the only major types of error that he has a habit of missing are those involving parallelism or comparison errors, so I will be assigning him additional worksheets to shore up those weaknesses as well.

Tutoring review by Brianna in Park Ridge, IL
Today the student worked on her Chapter 3 online assignments. She had to find numerous functions to satisfy given terms. She attempted the homework assignment previously and had received a grade in the 30's. She is allowed multiple attempts to submit answers, so after going over the problems together, she was able to find correct answers to every problem. Despite the low grade on the previous submission, she seemed to understand the material, but after making small mistakes (which led to incorrect answers) she began to second guess herself. We also reviewed the Chapter 2 test and she was able to see what mistakes were made and how to correct them. Math problems which required completing a square seemed to cause her trouble, so we will definitely focus on that during our review, before the final.
