We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader. and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

The student has an AP style test coming up, so we worked on preparing her for that. We worked through problems that dealt with concepts she learned from the beginning of the school year (i.e. limits, derivatives, area approximations, etc.). She had forgotten most of these techniques, so we discussed each problem in detail for review.

Today we went over a test on chapter 5 in preparation for student's finals in 2 weeks. This was the test that she performed quite badly on 6 months ago. It was quite a realization when we saw how much easier all the test problems were for the student just short 6 months later. Learning/tutoring works! Problems included using half-angle and double-angle trig identities to prove a variety of trig identities. Others included calculating sin, cos, tan, cotan when just one function was given. Strategy included drawing the unit triangle and realizing that sinx is y and cosx is x, including the signs. When the quadrant was determined from here, the rest was easy. Student is showing rapid learning and, as mentioned, great progress over the past 6 months, which is a big win win in my view. For her homework, we suggested going over some of the multiple choice questions that are going to be on the final test.

Calculus Tutoring review by Alena in Reading
We were working on prerequisite skills in calculus. Particularly, we were solving logarithmic and exponential equations. In the beginning of the session, we went over the basis properties of logarithms and laws of logarithms and applied for evaluating logarithms. We were solving exponential equations by taking logarithms of two sides and solving exponential equation in quadratic form by substitution. The last part of the session we dedicated to the unversed trigonometric functions. We graphed inverse sines, cosines, and tangent functions and derived their domain and range. After that, we evaluated inverse trig statements. The student received 6 exponential and logarithmic equations to solve for the next session.

We reviewed for the student's final exam: more applications to optimization, indefinite integrals and definite integrals, including using the method of substitution, and calculating Riemann sums.

This was my last session with the student, as she is graduating next week and with good grades she does not to take the finals. We worked mainly on integrals and definite integrals. We solved mainly her last homework problems. The student is, as usual, a good and fast learner. I has happy to see her fast answer when I asked to verify a result by finding a definite integral that we had estimated. In less than two minutes she had the answer. She has been one of my best students. I am confident in her future academic success. The session went great....
