Bath 5th Grade Tutoring FAQ
In many school systems, fifth grade marks the end of elementary education. Whether your child is gearing up for the transition to middle school or is enrolled in a school district with a different format, the material covered in this year can be pivotal to your child's success in later courses. Math concepts compound and begin to test your child's knowledge of exponents, fractional operations, and three-dimensional geometry. Language arts and English coursework begin to require in-depth analyses and integration of reading and compositional components. Science and history lessons delve into greater detail, requiring students to make judgements and connections about cause and effect. The fifth-grade curricula frequently begins to shift away from teaching students novel concepts and instead focuses more on developing critical thinking skills and new applications for the foundational material presented in previous courses.
For students who struggled to master a given topic previously, seeing its resurgence in fifth-grade coursework can be daunting. If your child is struggling to grasp the concepts presented in his or her classroom, Varsity Tutors can help you and your child connect with a tutor who can help. Tutors work to help prepare your child for the challenges of middle school and beyond, solidifying the basics upon which numerous future classes will rely. When you call your our educational directors, they will develop an academic profile of your student. They take into account his or her areas of challenge, strengths, weaknesses, learning habits, and even extracurricular interests. This background can then be used to help you select a compatible tutor who can present subject material using teaching methods that mesh with your child's learning style.
This is extremely beneficial because this often doesn't happen in a classroom setting. Your child's teacher doesn't really have the time to focus on the needs of individual students. Thus, if your child gets lost, they may not be able to catch back up because their teacher may be either unwilling or unable to slow down. This same idea applies to a student who is more advanced than their classmates. If your child is ready to move on and their classmates are still struggling with a particular subject, it is easy for your child to get bored. A private tutor can help in either instance because they can give your child as much time as they need to master a subject. If they are having trouble, their tutor can give them more time to make adjustments. Additionally, if your child has already mastered a subject area, their tutor can move on to more advanced topics to keep them engaged.
Tutors strive to tailor their lessons to your child's needs. You can even collaborate with your child's tutor to develop a custom learning plan for your child to follow. If, perhaps, your child is most interested in expanding upon a specific area of interest, his or her tutor can help with that as well. Tutors can provide advanced topics for your child to master in the subject of his or her choice while also focusing on any academic shortcomings in other areas.
The flexibility of private tutoring allows your child to receive the personal attention, academic rigor, and educational support to best help him or her succeed in school. Lessons can take place at the times and location of your choosing. Your child's tutor can meet with them in the library after school, at your home on the weekend, or even online on a weekday evening. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform allows you and your child to meet a private tutor face-to-online. No matter your preferences or scheduling constraints, your child's tutor can work to accommodate you and your child's needs. If you are interested in getting assistance connecting with a fifth-grade tutor, contact Varsity Tutors today.

Recent Bath 5th Grade Tutoring Session Notes
We learned how to multiply and divide with decimals. Then she used today's lesson and our previous session to find the discounted prices of items in a store (page in her workbook that worked perfectly with our session!). She is making great progress. She really worked hard in this session, and took deep breaths whenever frustrated. I'm very proud of her hard work. For Monday, she needs to complete the book summary and the two pages of practice work with decimals.
Today was very productive. I brought over a book that introduced fifth grade material to see if it was something the student would be interested in working on. After flipping through the book, we both agreed that it would be best if we focused primarily on 5th grade math. Starting our next session, we will be working out of the 5th grade math workbooks. I also brought over a game that I thought she would benefit from, seeing as she is more responsive to learning by playing games. It seemed to work out very well. She was motivated to answer the questions and seemed more and more interested as she kept answering the cards correctly.
The student and I went over reading and math. For the reading sections, he read passages on octopi and cats in Egypt. He answered nearly all of the questions correctly. After this, we focused on math. I had him do addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems. He did very well with it all. I didn't leave him with extra practice.
The student showed me his personal narrative draft: mini-lessons on making a web as a pre-write, using 5 sense details/similes, and hooking your reader with a lead. He completed a multiplication table (7 min 30 sec). We reviewed area model strategy for 2 and 3 digit factor multiplication, and worked on single-step multiplication word problems. HW: Rewrite draft with hook and 5 sense details. 6 single-step word problems. Practice multiplication facts/multiplication table.
During this session, the student and I reviewed a skills packet based on the material we have discussed this far. After he finished ten of the problems, the student and I would review the answers, as well as his reasoning for his answer choices. For next week's session, he and I will focus on visualizing fractions and graphing.
