So You Want To Be An Archaeologist?
Dr. Colleen Darnell
Egyptologist, Archaeologist, Knowledge Seeker
About Dr. Colleen Darnell
A Yale-trained Egyptologist, Dr. Colleen Darnell has traveled the world researching hieroglyphic inscriptions. She led an archaeological expedition in Egypt that discovered a fifteen-hundred year old Roman settlement in the Eastern Desert, and with her husband, Professor John Darnell, published the first complete English translation of the texts in the Valley of the Kings. Dr. Darnell was the first to identify works of historical fiction written by the ancient Egyptians themselves. Colleen and her husband Professor John Darnell have been hard at work on an exciting new biography of Akhenaten and Nefertiti, the parents of King Tut, entitled Egypt's Golden Couple: When Akhenaten and Nefertiti Were Gods on Earth, published November 1, 2022 by St Martin's Press. She shares her passion for Egyptology with “kids” of all ages.
About the class
Few careers can sound as alluring as an archaeologist: visiting exotic, ancient places, solving long-pondered mysteries of the old world and discovering long lost treasures. But what is the life of an archaeologist really like? How does the reality of archaeology match the expectations we may have from books and movies? What is the path to get there? And what can students start doing today to pursue or try out that path?
Find out in this live, interactive career event with leading archaeologist and Egyptologist Dr. Colleen Darnell. She’ll take you behind the scenes of archaeology careers, help you identify the skills and credentials you’ll need to develop to pursue it, compare and contrast the archaeology life with what people tend to imagine it to be, and set you on the path to getting there yourself–plus answer questions and share some secrets and stories from her own archaeology adventures.
