I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. I am working towards my Bachelor's degree in American Sign Language Interpreting. Sign Language is my passion! I have been signing for 6 years and have also been heavily involved in my local Deaf community both in my hometown and at my college. I have several Deaf and Hard of Hearing friends and teachers who have helped me to develop my signing skills. Last year, I taught a sign language class at my local homeschool co-op. I had 12 students ranging from ages 9-13. I loved teaching and developing my own curriculum. It was very challenging, but ultimately grew my skills as a teacher. Prior to teaching sign language, I was employed by a couple of different families from my community to tutor their children and help them improve their grades. One family hired me to tutor their daughter, who had developed failing grades after transferring from Public to Private school. I tutored her in all her various subjects and helped her achieve the grades she wanted. My other tutoring job was for a homeschooling family of five children. All the children had various forms of ADHD and ADD. The children mostly struggled with reading, English grammar, writing, and math, however I tutored them in all their subjects. I taught all four of their children at once, one day a week for years. The children have greatly improved and are getting top grades. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring! I myself am dyslexic and understand the frustrations of learning with special needs. I have found that assessing and listening to the needs of the student is the best way to help them achieve their goals. I typically prefer to teach from an easy-to-understand visual technique that allows the student to grasp the information at their pace and provides them with the best chance for success. I have found that visual learning has greatly helped my students to understand complex ideas and even explain the difficult concepts they are learning. This essentially teaches the student intelligent ways to teach themselves to succeed in their field of study. I enjoy seeing my student succeed, grow, and get excited about what they are learning!
