Micah: Lower East Side tutor
Certified Tutor
As a Tutor, I draw on a background in writing and social science, combined with mentoring and coaching experience, to build students' academic skills -- and the confidence necessary to use them.
I graduated in 2022 from Columbia University with a major in Urban Studies, and a specialization in American Studies. This fall, I will be attending Harvard University as a Master of Urban Planning. I have experience both in academic and persuasive writing, with written work published in the Chicago Tribune, Jersey City Times, and Columbia Political Review, as well as a 60-page thesis completed during my undergraduate studies.
My motivational tutoring approach comes from three years of experience as a coach for high-school Speech and Debate teams, where a focus on research-driven argumentation -- and a supportive teaching style -- helped lead my students to national success.
My areas of expertise include:
- Academic Writing: whether students are working on the fundamentals of essay composition, or seeking to move beyond the 'five-paragraph' format, I'm prepared to coach them through every step of the writing process. My experience in opinion journalism -- a concise, accessible format -- informs my focus on sharp prose, and persuasive rhetoric.
- History and Social Studies: with experience across the social science disciplines, and a particular focus on American History, I'm passionate about helping students uncover the dynamics behind historical events, and generate their own findings from primary sources.
- Application Support: teasing out a compelling personal narrative from one's interests, experiences, and accomplishments is the central task -- and struggle -- of application writing. Whether for colleges, scholarships, or other competitive applications, I have a good deal of experience crafting personal statements, and a strong track-record with admissions committees.
